There is little doubt that Deadpool 3 is currently one of the most highly anticipated films of 2024. But are we actually going to see the sequel in theaters next year? Director Shawn Levy expressed uncertainty about the film's scheduled release date!
During an interview for his upcoming Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See, Levy revealed that approximately half of Deadpool 3 has been filmed and edited. However, the director also confirmed that he is unsure if the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel will manage to be completed in time for the previously scheduled May 2024 release.
“I wish I knew. I don’t even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3,” Levy told TheWrap. He then addressed the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike's impact on the film's production and eventual release.
“Certainly, the actors’ strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We’ve shot half the movie. I’ve edited half the movie. We’re dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year,” Levy said.
This is certainly the opposite of a previous report that hopefully indicated Deadpool 3 could soon be moving forward. Following the impending conclusion of the actors' strike, Hollywood studios are gearing up to promptly resume several paused productions. Disney, for its part, has notably emphasized its dedication to maintaining Deadpool 3's scheduled release date of May 3, 2024, deeming it a "top priority" for the company once the strike is resolved.
Will Deadpool 3 get a 2024 release date?
For now, the SAG-AFTRA strike is still undergoing negotiations. However, there is hope that an agreement will be made in the next few weeks. If all goes well, Deadpool 3 is expected to resume production straight away and hopefully make it for its scheduled May 2024 premiere.
Deadpool 3 will bring back Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with Mouth and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The third movie is also set to bring back Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios. Production on the film started early this year before being halted due to the strikes. However, the movie is expected to resume productions once a deal is struck.
The sequel will be the first one produced by Marvel Studios since the company acquired 20th Century Fox. Deadpool 3 is currently expected to premiere on May 3, 2024.
