Barbie, under the direction of Greta Gerwig, has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing Earth's mightiest heroes introduced in the 2012 film The Avengers. Amazingly, the Margot Robbie movie is now well on its way to defeating the rest of the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks!
According to Box Office Mojo, Barbie has now grossed $626 million domestically, securing its place as the 11th highest-grossing movie in the United States. In doing so, it has dethroned The Avengers, which sits at $623 million and has now gone down to the 12th spot.
It's already an amazing feat but the Greta Gerwig movie is just getting started. The next target for Barbie is Jurassic World, which has a domestic total of $653 million. It's worth noting that while Barbie has claimed the 11th spot, Marvel can still find solace in the fact that Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Endgame hold higher ranks in the top 10, at positions eight, six, three, and two, respectively. On the other hand, it looks like the movie is steadily making its way up the list and could soon be defeating the entire MCU.
Since its release on July 21 (also known as Barbenheimer Day), Barbie has been steadily shattering records. It is the highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing film directed by a solo female director, and now stands as the 14th highest-grossing film of all time. The film's remarkable success reflects its impact on the box office and the cinematic landscape.
Barbie was directed by Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll. The film follows Robbie's Stereotypical Barbie as she tries to cure her sudden worries about mortality and embarks on a journey to find the girl who has been playing with her in real life. The movie also stars Ryan Gosling, America Ferreira, and Ariana Greenblatt, who recently appeared as the young Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars series Ahsoka.
