Zack Snyder signed a two-year deal with Netflix after the massive success of the 2021 Army of the Dead, which became one of the streamers' most-viewed original movies. This deal includes the release of the two-part film, Rebel Moon, which second part, The Scargiver, just hit the service on Friday. And though these movies have different themes—one is epic space opera and the other is post-apocalyptic—Snyder has hidden an Easter Egg in the first Rebel Moon movie, A Child of Fire, and teases a “weird mashup.”
In an interview with ComicBook, Snyder revealed that despite their differences, Rebel Moon and Army of the Dead could exist in the same universe. In fact, there's a hidden character in A Child of Fire that is closely connected with the zombie apocalypse movie.
“I think I've said that, but there's a character in movie one when they go into -- I don't know if I've talked about this -- when they go into the bar and there's a Xanadite,” he said. “The Xanadite is that blue girl with glowing markings on her -- she is directly from the Army animated series that we never finished.”
Snyder explained that Xanadites come from the planet Xanadu, where the zombie plague originated. If the planet’s name rings a bell, the scientists who named it are, according to the director, big fans of Olivia Newton-John, who has a hit song with the same title. So, the girl seen in a brothel in Providence is a part of that species.
“So, there's an interdimensional thing they go through, so there is a chance of some weird mashup,” he teased.
Will there be Army of the Dead 2?
Snyder has big plans for the possible Army of the Dead 2, but Netflix has yet to greenlight the project officially. In an interview with GamesRadar in December 2023, the filmmaker revealed that his idea for the second movie was Planet of the Dead, which would see a massive jump in scale for his zombie franchise.
This concept already made Snyder excited, as he was already trying to “run parallel courses” with two monsters, which he didn’t reveal. However, what made him more thrilled was the fans’ excitement to see more from the Army universe. There’s also a planned animated series titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas based on the movie. Though the show was said to be canceled, Snyder claimed that it was still in the works.
Will there be Rebel Moon Part 3?
It looks like Kora’s journey is far from over. Ahead of Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver’s release, Snyder was already teasing the coming of Rebel Moon Part 3. In an interview with Forbes, he said they have been working on a “part three,” and they all know where they’re headed.
“We’ve known that for quite a while, to be honest,” he revealed. “So yeah, I’m excited to make some more Rebel Moon movies - that would be fun.”
He also told Radio Times that he planned on doing “four or six” Rebel Moon movies. However, it remains to be seen if it will be standalone or divided like the first two films.
“We were talking about it the other day and I was like, would an audience be disappointed if they only got one movie now from Rebel Moon?” he continued. “Would they be like, 'Oh, it's one now? Great.'”
Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2 and Army of the Dead are now streaming on Netflix. Snyder has a big dream for his movie franchises and plans to create a shared universe on the streaming giant.
