X-Men ‘97 has done it again, featuring several hair-raising turns of events with every episode released. The recently released Episode 8, titled Tolerance Is Extinction – Part 1, isn’t just full of action, but it’s also filled with a number of surprising cameos, Easter eggs, and revelations. But if one thing has caught the viewers’ attention, it’s when Val Cooper says, “Magneto was right.” So, what does it mean?

From a supervillain, Magneto became the new leader of the X-Men in X-Men ‘97, following Charles Xavier’s presumed death in the original X-Men: The Animated Series. He’s now the mutants’ staunch ally and a hero himself, far different from the antagonist fans used to see. However, compared to Charles, who strongly believes that mutants and humans can peacefully co-exist, Magneto has a different belief.

Magneto is convinced that humans will always see themselves as superior to mutants, exerting their power over those they see as less than them. Hence, due to his trauma after surviving the Holocaust, he wants mutants to dominate the world and eradicate humans. Though he has put this belief on the sidelines after leading the X-Men, with all the events that happened in the series, from Storm losing her powers to the attack on Genosha to Bastion unleashing his Prime Sentinels, Episode 8 proved “Magneto was right” all along, humanity and mutantkind can’t co-exist, after humans become weapons used against mutants.

The History of “Magneto was Right” in the X-Men

The phrase “Magneto was right” isn’t new in the X-Men. It was first popularized by the young mutant Quentin Quire, who donned a shirt with the phrase, in the New X-Men #135 (2003) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. As a young mutant who possessed great power and attended Xavier’s School for Gifted Children, he saw Magneto as someone who had embraced fascism despite being a victim of fascism himself at the hands of the Nazis.

However, Quire didn’t prove Magneto was right in the comics, but Cyclops did. After getting tired of the humans’ constant oppression, Cyclops turned the X-Men into a more active force by taking out the potential threats before they even happened. Though this approach divided the group, Magneto ended up siding with Cyclops’ X-Men.
