During Star Wars Celebration, three new Star Wars movies were announced, one of them being Daisy Ridley’s film which was expected to release first on December 19, 2025. However, the news regarding the release of these three Lucasfilm movies came before the Hollywood strikes entered the scene which greatly affected the industry.
As a matter of fact, the movie was reportedly delayed from December 25, 2025, to May 22, 2026, after the WGA strike and before the SAG-AFTRA strike. Later, a June report from Production Weekly (via World of Reel) suggested that the movie would reportedly start production in April 2024. So far, we’re unsure if the actors’ strike has or will lead to any more delays, but we sure do hope it doesn’t.
Despite that, these strikes aren’t the only setback Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s project has had to face. Before the movie was announced, writer Damon Lindelof “was asked to leave,” sharing that the upcoming film is still going to happen, "but unfortunately not with [him]." Later, Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight was hired to write the script again, and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy revealed in April that he would be submitting a script "in the next month and a half."
Unfortunately, between then and the strikes starting in May, not much is known about his progress. But the good news is that since Obaid-Chinoy and Daisy Ridley’s movie was in development first as compared to the other two, it is going to be the next Star Wars movie to get released in theatres.

The last release date for Star Wars’ brand-new Jedi Order movie was reportedly May 22, 2026. However, as mentioned above this date was reported before the SAG-AFTRA strike took over, so it isn’t anything confirmed as of now.
But since the writers’ strike has ended and if the writers’ strike comes to an end soon, it’s possible the movie might keep its original May 2026 release date, and that is also if casting and scheduling don’t come in the middle of that. If something does come in the middle of the original release date, then Star Wars has a December 18, 2026 slot, as well as a December 2027.

Before he was let go and his pitch scrapped, Damon Lindelof’s story for the movie was supposed to take place 60 years after the events of Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker and followed the life of an older Rey. But the new script that is being written by Steve Knight is set to pick up the story 15 years after the events of episode IX where “the Jedi are in disarray:"
We don’t know yet who these other Jedi are, but there are rumors of John Boyega returning as Finn. According to Kathleen Kennedy, Rey will also attempt to rebuild the Jedi Order according to the book and what she had promised Luke Skywalker. However, the details are a bit blurry and we’ll have to see how different this new Jedi Order is from the last one.
Kennedy also highlighted that having a new order that takes place many years after the previously known events allows them to “start with something fresh.” He said, "And I think it offers just tremendous opportunity to introduce new characters and start with something fresh, because we culminated with what George [Lucas] was creating, and now we take all of that and move it to the next chapter."
The details shared by Kathleen Kennedy about this movie sound amazing, and hopefully, fans won’t have to wait much longer before hearing new updates on this. If everything goes according to plan, a script for this movie should be ready within the next two months. So fans should expect an update around that time.
