Netflix is about to take a war action movie to another level in the upcoming Uprising. Set to be the opening film for the 29th Busan International Film Festival on October 2, a first for a streaming movie, the historical flick is now considered a masterpiece for its depiction of the Joseon era, Korea's last and longest-lived imperial dynasty. However, in addition to the rival Western and Southern factions, the chaos of the war also affected the personal relationships of people who grew up in this period. That said, Netflix has dropped the first Uprising teaser, showing how Kang Don-won and Park Jeong-min turn from childhood friends to great adversaries.

Netflix has finally unveiled the first look at its highly anticipated K-movie Uprising. The teaser starts by showing young versions of Kang and Park. The two go on sparring, but the latter is defeated. As a lowly servant, Kang is reprimanded for defeating the king's only son. Despite that, they continue their friendship and go on a friendly battle again when they become young men.

This friendship has been widely debated, with some wondering why a highborn like Park would befriend a low-born like Kang. However, as the war begins, the two go their separate ways and join opposing sides. Since then, things have started to change between them.

When Kang and Park meet again post-war, they start facing each other, turning childhood friends into enemies as the battle worsens. With Kang’s exceptional sword skills, he has become known as the Blue-Robed God. This angers Park, asking his servants to take Kang to him. Chaos erupts as a battle between them begins, but Kang admits he can no longer “go on this way.”

Netflix has also released the official poster for Uprising. The image shows Kang and Park facing each other, each holding a sword and ready to fight, while people cause commotion behind them.

What is Uprising about?

Uprising will follow the story of two childhood friends, Jong Ryeo (Park) and Cheon Young (Kang). However, due to their differing life statuses—Cheon being the lowly servant of Jong’s elite military family—they become victims of war and eventually turn into adversaries. As they grow up and take on their own responsibilities, Jong becomes a military officer serving King Seonjo, while Cheon becomes a soldier in the righteous army.

You can read the synopsis for Uprising below:

Set in the Joseon era, during a tumultuous time in the aftermath of war,  Uprising takes viewers on a gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries: an enslaved person with remarkable martial prowess who struggles to break free from an unjust servitude, and his master and scion of Joseon’s most influential military family.

In addition to Kang and Park, the movie will feature Cha Seung-won as King Seonjo, Kim Shin-rock as Beom-dong, Jin Sun-kyu as Ja-ryeong, and Jung Sung-il as Genshin. The film is directed by Kim Sang-man (Girl Scout, Midnight FM) and written and produced by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Decision to Leave).
