The Wheel of Time actress Rosamund Pike recently revealed how the lack of access to the One Power affects Moiraine in Season 2. Moiraine, a powerful Aes Sedai, spent the epic fantasy series' entire season first season looking for the Dragon Reborn, a character that’s destined to either destroy or side with the villainous Dark One. By the end of Season 1, Moiraine ended up losing her connection to the One Power, the only element that defines her abilities as an Aes Sedai.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rosamund Pike shared how Moiraine can still fight in The Wheel of Time Season 2, despite losing her access to the One Power. She claims that her character can use her other abilities to her advantage, even though Moiraine has changed without her powers. You can read the actress’ entire response below:
“She has a lot of things to defend herself from and a lot of people to protect, and now she has to do those same things without access to her greatest weapon. She's feeling an aching loss of the One Power. It is a sweetness, it's a life force. I think it would be akin to entering a deep period of depression, but Moiraine is resilient, and she still has all the other things that she always had: Her guile, her ability to manipulate others and think ahead, her layered plans, her foresight and intuition.”
Moiraine in The Wheel Of Time Season 2
By the end of Season 1, Rand al’Thor was revealed to be the Dragon Reborn during his fight with the Dark One alongside Moiraine. Rand then asks Moiraine to keep a secret and tell his friends that he passed away in battle so they think he’s dead in Season 2. Despite having lost her connection to the One Power, which could turn out to be a real challenge for her as she goes on, Moiraine is forced to keep this secret.
However, as Pike explained, her character has tons of strengths she can use to her advantage aside from her magical powers. These abilities will come in handy when facing the Seanchan, people capturing channelers for their own evil plans. Regardless of having lost her powers, Moiraine is still going to take full advantage of the situation she’s in to help the channelers who have either been enslaved by the Seanchan or are oppressed by Whitecloaks.
As a result of keeping Rand’s secret, Moiraine might become much more reserved with everyone as the season progresses. However, she has plenty of strengths apart from her connection to the One Power, so in the upcoming season her character might go through some serious development. We can’t wait to see how Moiraine plans on going forward in Season 2 without her One Power.
