When The Watcher debuted on Netflix in October, it felt like a limited series, and that's because it was. Ryan Murphy's most recent success was intended to be a one-off story, but after it topped streaming charts, it was decided to bring the series back for another installment. Though the American streaming giant announced The Watcher Season 2 in a somewhat casual manner, it was certainly excellent news for the fans.

Based on a true story and created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, The Watcher follows a couple who purchase and move into their ideal home. Nonetheless, it quickly becomes apparent that Dean and Nora Braddock are not tolerated in their community. In addition to having creepy neighbors, they begin to receive menacing letters from someone named The Watcher. As of this writing, it remains unknown if The Watcher Season 2 will be a direct sequel or if it will be a brand-new anthology series.

The first season was released on October 13, 2022, and consisted of seven episodes, each of which lasted between 44 and 52 minutes. The series was incredibly successful and remained at the top of Netflix's rankings for an extended period of time. As fans await for more details, here is everything we know about the forthcoming The Watcher Season 2.

The renewal was announced just a few weeks after the series premiere on October 13, 2022, so production on The Watcher Season 2 could begin relatively swiftly. However, this will not occur immediately, so the earliest fans may see new episodes between October and November 2023.

To recall, Variety reported on November 7, 2022, that Netflix had greenlit The Watcher Season 2. The entertainment news outlet also disclosed that Netflix had ordered two additional seasons of the anthology series Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

It was Netflix’s Head of Global TV Bela Bajaria who divulged in an official press release sent to Variety that The Watcher Season 2 and Monster Season 2 are indeed happening. She said:

"Audiences can't take their eyes off Monster and The Watcher . The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan on Monster along with Eric Newman on The Watcher are masterful storytellers who captivated audiences all over the world. The back-to-back force of these two series is due to Ryan's distinct original voice which created cultural sensations and we are thrilled to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes."

Again, it remains unclear if The Watcher Season 2 will directly continue what happened in the first installment. However, if it does, then fans can expect a number of cast members to make a comeback in the upcoming new installment, such as Luke David Blumm as Carter Brannock, Isabel Gravitt as Ellie Brannock, Bobby Cannavale as Dean Brannock and Naomi Watts as Nora Brannock.

Other stars expected to return in The Watcher Season 2 also include Henry Hunter Hall as Dakota, Joe Mantello as William “Bill" Webster and John Graff, Christopher McDonald as Det. Rourke Chamberland, Terry Kinney as Jasper Winslow, Mia Farrow as Pearl Winslow, Richard Kind as Mitch and Margo Martindale as Maureen/Mo. The return of Jennifer Coolidge is uncertain, however, because the last time we saw Karen, she fled the house after The Watcher appeared and scared her.

Jennifer previously revealed that she has not received the call to reprise her role in The Watcher Season 2. She told Entertainment Weekly:

"I mean, I'm wondering. I wonder if they will call Karen back. I would definitely go if they offer, if they ask me. "I wanted to tell Ryan that Karen can run much faster. I hope she's back."

Meanwhile, the only way to bring back Noma Dumezweni's character Theodora Birch, who died of liver cancer at the first season's conclusion, is through flashbacks. Fans can expect Netflix to announce additional cast members for The Watcher Season 2 in the coming months.

The Watcher Season 2 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?

Credit: Netflix

Given that the first installment concluded with the mystery of who The Watcher is unresolved, there is space for The Watcher Season 2 to delve deeper into this topic. The mystery has not been solved in reality, but the program deviates significantly from the actual events, so there's no reason why the forthcoming second installment couldn't be even more fictitious.

The reason why the identity of The Watcher was not disclosed is likely because it was never revealed in the true story on which this show is based. Even now, Derek and Maria Broaddus, the former proprietors of 657 Boulevard, are still without answers. Derek has previously described this experience to The Sun as "traumatic,” and similar to Bobby's character on the show, he "thinks about it every day.”

The Watcher could also become an anthology series about various families stalked in their homes. If so, The Watcher Season 2 could investigate another true story or be entirely fictional.
