Despite the declining number of Hollywood movies released in China, it’s about to change with the coming of Marvel Studios’ The Marvels. However, the Captain Marvel sequel will get a new title in the country and a new poster featuring all the main characters.

It has been confirmed that The Marvels will hit the Chinese theaters four years after the country unofficially banned movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Thankfully, it has finally changed this year, as all recent films from the franchise are now allowed in The Red Dragon. In fact, before The Marvels, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 made it in the Chinese theaters.

However, just like Wakanda Forever, which title was changed to Black Panther 2: Long Live Wakanda, The Marvels would also have a new name in China: Captain Marvel 2. However, not all MCU movies released in the country saw a title change. Quantumania kept its title when it was released in February, though it had its alternative name, Ant-Man 3: Quantum Frenzy. Though the title change is puzzling, there’s a good explanation for that.

Why was The Marvels' title changed in China?

Though Marvel Studios doesn’t explain why The Marvels’ title had to be changed in China, it might have something to do with its performance at the box office. Changing the title to be much simpler and concise may help the movie do well. It also looks like the title has to be clear to the Chinese moviegoers, stating that it’s a direct sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel.

However, it seems to change the story the title The Marvels is trying to convey, which is the team-up between Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau. But considering it will be released in a foreign country, clearing that it’s the continuation of Captain Marvel is a must.

The new The Marvels poster in China already bears the Captain Marvel 2 title. Compared to the US key art, the new one features all the lead characters: Nick Fury, the cat Goose, Captain Marvel, Monica, Ms. Marvel, Marvel Boy, and the villain Dar-Benn.
