The Mandalorian Season 4 Was Originally Going to Be "About Grand Admiral Thrawn" to Set Up Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2

Jon Favreau reveals he had to "start from scratch" on The Mandalorian and Grogu after abandoning original Season 4 scripts tied to Ahsoka Season 2 and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Star Wars fans were expected to see Din Djarin and Grogu’s story continue in The Mandalorian Season 4 on Disney+, but that didn’t end up being the case. Instead, the narrative shifted to a theatrical film titled The Mandalorian and Grogu. Jon Favreau had already written all the scripts for the planned fourth season, and this story would have heavily connected to Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2, weaving in larger galactic events involving Grand Admiral Thrawn.

"You can't just take those scripts and turn them into a movie," Favreau explained in the latest issue of SFX magazine (via GamesRadar). "There were a lot of characters, it assumed you'd watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline]."

"This is a completely different medium," Favreau continued, referring to the transition from episodic television to a feature film, "so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian's apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you've never seen the show. But there's still a lot of Star Wars in there. You're going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn't diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film."

The decision to repurpose elements of the storyline reflects the evolving nature of Star Wars storytelling under Lucasfilm. The original Mandalorian Season 4 scripts reportedly served as a bridge to ongoing plots in the New Republic era, setting up conflicts that would spill over into other series. By adapting the core relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu into a self-contained movie, Favreau aimed to make the story accessible to both longtime viewers and newcomers while preserving key thematic elements of mentorship, loyalty, and adventure in a dangerous galaxy. This approach allows the film to stand alone without requiring extensive prior knowledge of The Mandalorian’s three seasons, yet it still hints at larger developments across the Star Wars timeline.

In the first season of Ahsoka, Grand Admiral Thrawn (played by Lars Mikkelsen) made his live-action return as a formidable Imperial remnant leader. The season concluded with Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger separated, with some characters left stranded on the distant planet Peridea after a climactic confrontation. These events positioned Thrawn as a central antagonist in the post-Return of the Jedi era, raising stakes for the New Republic and setting the stage for potential crossovers that the scrapped Mandalorian scripts had begun to explore.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for theatrical release on May 22, 2026. The film will see Din Djarin and Grogu embark on a new mission, emphasizing their bond as a clan of two while delivering high-stakes action and exploration of Mandalorian culture. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 is expected to release sometime this year on Disney+, though no confirmed release date has been announced yet. Production details remain under wraps, but the season is anticipated to continue directly from the events of the first season, delving deeper into the threats posed by Thrawn and the mysterious forces at play on Peridea.
