Adapted from Susumu Maeya's manga serialized on Kodansha's Comic Days platform since 2019, the story delivers a gentle slice-of-life experience centered on cultural adaptation and the simple pleasure of food. Suzume Tachibana, a maid-in-training from a British estate, finds herself unexpectedly living in Japan for a full year following an unforeseen event.
Instead of focusing on homesickness or challenges, she channels her energy into discovering and savoring Japan's rich culinary landscape. Whether it's enjoying crispy taiyaki filled with sweet red bean paste, fluffy melon bread from a local bakery, hot takoyaki from a street stall, or perfectly shaped onigiri, Suzume approaches each bite with genuine wonder and appreciation. Along the way, her meals become opportunities for small, meaningful connections with neighbors, shopkeepers, and friends, emphasizing themes of comfort, curiosity, and finding happiness in the everyday.
Kodansha USA's description of the anime captures this essence perfectly:
What’s a maid to do when she finds herself suddenly stuck in Japan for a year? Eat, of course! Follow maid-in-training Suzume Tachibana as she tries all sorts of Japanese food, from sweets like taiyaki and melon bread to savory snacks like takoyaki and onigiri! Be warned, though—while Suzume sates her appetite through delicious treat after delicious treat, she might just end up whetting yours!
The manga has maintained steady popularity for its wholesome portrayal of food as a bridge between cultures and people, with multiple volumes available and ongoing serialization appealing to fans of relaxing, gourmet-themed stories.
The Food Diary of Miss Maid is scheduled to premiere in April 2026, broadcasting on Tokyo MX, Yomiuri TV (ytv), and BS Asahi, with streaming planned on services including dAnime Store and others.
