Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown is set to star in an adaptation of a novel by Simon Stålenhag called The Electric State, which centers on a teenage orphan traveling across a retro-futuristic American West with a drifter and a robot pal searching for her lost brother. There is already a lot of excitement surrounding the imminent Netflix movie simply because of all the big names associated with it.

Announced on June 28, 2022, the upcoming American science fiction adventure film will be directed by Anthony Russo and Joseph “Joe” Russo, collectively known as the Russo brothers, who were best known for directing four movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Prior to their confirmed involvement in The Electric State, Anthony and Joe also worked together as directors for The Gray Man and as producers for Everything Everywhere All at Once and Extraction 2.

Initially, the Russo brothers collaborated with Millie on The Electric State at the end of 2020, which was originally set up at Universal. However, after the negotiations failed, Netflix successfully acquired the rights to the project. As fans await for more details about the upcoming Netflix movie, here is everything you need to know about The Electric State.

Though being targeted for a 2024 release, Netflix has not yet announced the official release date of The Electric State as of this writing. Production on Millie Bobby Brown’s upcoming movie reportedly kicked off in late 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia, under the working title Stormwind.

However, on November 4, 2022, filming was momentarily halted due to the death of a crew member in a car accident that occurred off-set. Production concluded at the beginning of February 2023.

Due to the anticipated visual effects in The Electric State, post-production will likely require a considerable amount of time. But the omens are good, as industry people and readers alike are enthusiastic about how the forthcoming film is coming together.

The Electric State will revolve around an orphaned teen named Michelle and her trusty robot as they embark on a cross-country mission to find her missing sibling. The official synopsis of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel from Amazon reads:

“In late 1997, a runaway teenager and her small yellow toy robot travel west through a strange American landscape where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, along with the discarded trash of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system. As they approach the edge of the continent, the world outside the car window seems to unravel at an ever faster pace, as if somewhere beyond the horizon, the hollow core of civilization has finally caved in.”

The upcoming Netflix movie will likely be faithful to its source material. However, the Russo brothers and the writers might also make some changes to make The Electric State film more interesting than it already is.
