Eight years after a short teaser gave it a logo and a landscape, The Elder Scrolls VI reportedly has its official name at last. Bethesda has confirmed nothing, but a new report claims the name has been settled for a while, and that fans worked it out months before anyone said it out loud.
Tom Warren reports in The Verge's Notepad newsletter, citing sources familiar with Bethesda's plans, that the game will be titled The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Warren says Bethesda is preparing to announce the name, and that the announcement could come as soon as November, around the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on November 11.
Expectations for that announcement are narrow if the report holds. Warren expects only a name reveal next month and nothing more, even though Bethesda has reportedly been showing gameplay of the game internally in recent months.
The wait behind that modest reveal is the longest in the series' history. Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018 with a brief teaser and almost no detail, and the studio has said little in public since, beyond confirming that the game is its primary development focus following Starfield.
The reported setting is Hammerfell, the Redguard homeland on Tamriel's western coast. The province has appeared before in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online, and Sentinel itself is one of its largest cities, a port on the Iliac Bay.
The bigger claim concerns the story. Sentinel would reportedly be the first game in the series to focus on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, helping uncover the secrets of the mysterious ancient artifacts the franchise is named after, which have served as prophecy devices in the background until now.
The Clues Fans Already Put Together
The name did not arrive cold. In August, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saw a live playthrough of the game and publicly referred to it as The Elder Scrolls VI: **, hiding the subtitle behind eight asterisks while praising its scale and saying "the story is even greater."
Fans counted the asterisks and landed on Sentinel within hours. They also found what looks like a longer-running tease: the Employee Number shown on Starfield's character creation page, the same for every player, splits into pairs that convert into letters spelling Sentinel, and former Bethesda writer Michael Kirkbride replied "Yep" to a Reddit post floating the theory.
None of that makes the title official, and Bethesda has announced no release window and confirmed no platforms for the game. If the report holds, November brings the name first, and everything else about The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel stays behind the curtain a while longer.
