Sweet Tooth Season 3 is officially on its way. Fans are still reeling from the shocking conclusion of Season 2, so all eyes are now on the imminent third and final installment to see how things will continue for Gus, a deer-boy hybrid who emerges from his home in the forest to find the world devastated by “The Great Crumble.” Though Season 2 was darker than the first installment, it piqued interest in the potential futures of the characters.

Based on the DC comic book series of the same name, Sweet Tooth made its Netflix debut in 2021. It was an unexpected success on the American streaming platform, scoring 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and garnering 60 million households one month after its debut, paving the way for Season 2. The success of the second installment, which garnered 48.3 million hour views within the first four days of its release, and the call for another season pushed Netflix to announce Sweet Tooth Season 3.

The show’s unique blend of fairytale-like visuals, a gripping plot, and an emotional core that can shatter even the hardest of hearts has captivated audiences worldwide. Jim Mickle and Beth Schwartz, the show's creators, have remained true to Jeff Lemire's source material while adding their own flair to the series, providing viewers with immersive soundscapes, and breathtaking action sequences. As fans await for more details about the upcoming installment, here is everything you need to know about Sweet Tooth Season 3.

Though Netflix has already confirmed that Sweet Tooth Season 3 is happening, the American streaming giant has not yet announced its official release date as of this writing. The second and third installments were filmed simultaneously in order to circumvent continuity issues. Since streaming platforms like Netflix have no time constraints, they can release episodes whenever they choose.

While the strikes of its writers and actors have impacted the production and release of several shows, Sweet Tooth Season 3 is reportedly in post-production and anticipated to premiere on Netflix in early 2024. The streaming giant usually spaces out its shows by a year. However, despite the fact that a number of series are on hold or failed to complete production, avid followers of the American fantasy drama television series are eagerly anticipating the release of its third installment.

The epic ending of Gus’ journey will reportedly play out over eight episodes with the same length as the former two installments. Of the upcoming Sweet Tooth Season 3, showrunner Jim Mickle told Netflix:

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”

Sweet Tooth Season 3 Cast: Who are the actors included in the upcoming season?

Most of the major cast members are projected to make a come back for Sweet Tooth Season 3. Leading the list are Christian Convery, who will return as Gus, and Nonso Anozie, who will reprise his role as Tommy Jepperd.

Other stars expected to appear in Sweet Tooth Season 3 also include Christopher Sean Cooper Jr. as Teddy, Aliza Vellani as Rani, Naledi Murray as Wendy, Stefania LaVie Own as Bear, Neil Sandilands as General Abbot and Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Singh. Amy Seimetz, The Expanse star Cara Gee and Ayazhan Dalabayeva are also joining the cast as series regulars, portraying Birdie, Siana and Nuka, respectively.

Unfortunately, Johnny Abbot, portrayed by Marlon Williams, will not return for Sweet Tooth Season 3. Douglas regrettably shot and killed Johnny in the Season 2 finale. Also, Dania Ramirez will not reprise her role as Aimee Eden because she tragically succumbed to The Sick.

Showrunner, writer and director Jim Mickle will also return to helm the same positions for Sweet Tooth Season 3. He is also executive producing the show’s third and final installment alongside Amanda Burrell, Beth Schwartz, Susan Downey, Linda Moran and Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. Christina Ham, Mel Turner and Evan Moore are also confirmed to join as producers.

Undoubtedly, the search for Gus's mother will continue in Sweet Tooth Season 3, particularly now that he has suspicions about her location. To recall, Gus had a dream in which he followed snowy deer footprints to a cave where his mother, Birdie, was hiding. She asked for his help while crouched by the fire.

Upon awakening, the young hybrid was even more determined to locate Birdie, despite receiving a recording from Bear in which his mother discloses she intentionally avoided him to keep him safe. Sweet Tooth Season 3 will likely lead him to Alaska in search of her, with Jepperd, Bear, and Wendy pledging their support.

Jim Mickle previously revealed to Tudum that Sweet Tooth Season 3 is going to be “a lot darker” that Season 2. The showrunner stated:

"Gus is growing alongside the series, starting to mature as the themes get darker. In season three, everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves. Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another."

There are also a few loose ends that the imminent third installment must rightfully resolve, such as whether or not Gus can now control wildlife. To further give fans an idea of what they could expect in the forthcoming Sweet Tooth Season 3, here is the synopsis for the third and final volume of the DC comic book series:

"After years of the deadly Affliction, those who remain – the surviving humans and the new generation of animal-hybrid children – are searching for answers. And one place in all the world seems to have them: northern Alaska. It was in this faraway, frozen wilderness that the Affliction first took root, before eventually spreading its devastation throughout the globe. Gus, Jepperd, and their friends travel north to the remote research outpost where Gus was born in the hope that understanding the plague's source will lead to a cure. What power was unleashed in the frozen tundra? Can it be stopped? Even if the survivors reach their goal, there might not be anything left of humanity to save..."
