Tom Holland's highly-anticipated Spider-Man 4 finally gets casting update. Deadline reports that Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe film in an undisclosed role.
Sink, the 22-year-old American actress best known for playing Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, has been rumored to play Jean Grey in Marvel Studios' upcoming X-Men movie reboot, so while her character details in Spider-Man 4 are still being kept under wraps, the prevailing theory is that she would be introduced as the red-haired psionic mutant in the film.
Deadline described Sink's casting as a the "first major new role" that will be significant in Spider-Man 4, given how the third film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, concluded with Holland's Peter Parker making the decision to complete Doctor Strange's spell that wipes out his identity in the world.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, which releases the Spider-Man centric movies in Disney's MCU, haven't made an official comment regarding this update.
Sink is expected to return for the fifth and final season of Netlfix's Stranger Things, which recently wrapped production. She will also star in Searchlight musical O'Dessa, which made its world premiere at SXSW, and will make her Broadway debut next month in John Proctor Is the Villain. She also appeared alongside Dylan O'Brien in Taylor Swift's music video for All Too Well: The Short Film.
Who is Sadie Sink playing in the MCU?
Recent rumors claim that Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey in the highly-anticipated X-Men reboot, but Marvel Studios and Disney haven't officially revealed her MCU role at the time of this writing. Given that Spider-Man 4 is sort of a soft reboot for the series, it's possible that Peter Parker meets Jean Grey at some point in college
While fans are hoping that Sink would play Jean Grey in the MCU, Deadline also noted that the possibility of her playing "another beloved redheaded Spider-Man character" should not be discarded. With that mind, she could be playing Mary Jane, but Zendaya already depicted MJ in the MCU. Though it's possible that two Mary Janes from different universes could exist if the story of the next Spider-Man film will be multiverse-centric.
Spider-Man 4 is being directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, taking over Jon Watts, who helmed the first three Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. The sequel is currently scheduled to release in theaters on July 24, 2026
