Though new episodes of Andor were released individually (for the most part) during the first season of the show, Disney Plus is changing it up when the sequel begins this April. The first trailer for Andor Season 2 has been released on Monday morning, revealing 90 seconds of fresh footages to give us a glimpse of the upcoming action-heavy season. Diego Luna returns to the titular role of Cassian Andor, while Forest Whittaker's Saw Gerrera gets a lot of screentime in the video as well. It looks like Cassian's adventures will be bigger in the second and final season of the show as it'll show us the events leading up to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
According to the accompanying press release from Lucasfilm and Disney, Andor Season 2 has a total of 12 episodes, but they will be released in four chapters of three episodes each over the course of just four weeks. The new batch drops is a nice mixture of binge model and week-to-week model, and might be a refreshing change of pace that may add to the cinematic feel of the series. In a statement about the second season, creator and executive producer Tony Gilroy teased that the new season will follow Cassian's journey in the four years leading up to the events of Rogue One.
“One of the great thrills of making Andor is the scale of the story and the number of characters we’re able to meet — ordinary people, Imperial overlords, passionate revolutionaries,” Gilroy revealed. “They are real people making epic decisions, all of them staring down questions with terrifying consequences. Cassian’s journey is the soul and spine of our story, but it’s the choir that makes the show.”
What is Andor Season 2 about?
Andor series is a prequel to 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is a prequel to the first Star Wars movie in the franchise, Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. The story of Andor takes place after the events of Episode III, during the rise of the Galactic Empire, and five years before the events of Rogue One. The show is focused on the construction of the Death Star, which is prominently featured in the first trailer.
"While Season 1 followed Cassian’s reluctant journey from cynical nobody to revolutionary volunteer, the long-awaited conclusion in Andor Season 2 will see the characters and their relationships intensify as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance," the logline in today's press release teased. "Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound."
The trailer definitely shows that stakes are going to be raised in Andor Season 2 as Cassian headed to a fate we've already seen in Rogue One. The first Andor Season 2 trailer feels intense with the The Revolution Starts Now by Steve Earle as its soundtrack, playing while the blaster fire is timed to the beat. The Rebel Alliance is not holding back, with covert operations and heavy artillery at their disposal.
Andor Season is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on April 22 with its first three episodes; three new episodes will be released weekly after that.
