Sigourney Weaver has shared new information about her character's role in the highly-anticipated Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu. While the prolific actress couldn't reveal major details, she did tease that her character is someone of great important. During a recent interview with GamesRadar+ while promoting Apple TV+’s The Gorge, Weaver confirmed that her character will be giving orders to Din Djarin in the film.
"I play a wonderful character who is, you know, in a position of authority," Weaver revealed. “I have to send the Mandalorian out on a mission on the Outer Rim where all the bad stuff happens.” It was previously reported that Weaver is playing a New Republic Colonel Bishop in the movie, but since her character did not appear in The Mandalorian series, there's still a lot we don't know about her Star Wars role.
Why Sigourney Weaver joined Star Wars
In the same interview, Weaver, who first confirmed her role back in August 2024, also revealed that Grogu (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) is the main reason she decided to join Star Wars universe. “[H]e’s a little badass too,” Weaver said, hinting at what’s next for Grogu. “It’s going to be wonderful for people to see what Grogu is up to now because he’s grown up a little bit and is capable of much more than maybe we think just watching the series.”
Weaver, who starred in big sci-fi franchises like Alien and Avatar, has a great veteran screen presence that makes her an ideal fit to play a powerful figure in the galaxy far, far away. "I admire [Star Wars], but I don't sit around wishing I was in another franchise, because I've been so lucky to be in some wonderful ones," Weaver said. "But at the time, when I was offered it, I was delighted. I'm a great fan of John Favreau. I was already a great fan of The Mandalorian."
Jon Favreau is directing The Mandalorian & Grogu film, which is being co-written by Favreau and Dave Filoni. The Star Wars film is a continuation of The Mandalorian Disney+ series, and the film will star Pedro Pascal as the bounty hunter Din Djarin / The Mandalorian, Sigourney Weaver, and The Bear star Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt. Plot details are still being kept under wraps.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to release in theaters on May 22, 2026.
