A hand-drawn Wolf is heading to television. Crunchyroll's showcase at New York Comic Con 2026 put Sekiro: No Defeat front and center, screening the trailer for the eight-episode anime adaptation of FromSoftware's shinobi epic ahead of its January 2027 streaming debut.

The series, produced by KADOKAWA, Qzil.la, and ARCH, was presented as part of Crunchyroll's NYCC 2026 panel — a slate that also delivered a first look at the Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime and a sweeping co-production deal for around 15 WEBTOON adaptations. Sekiro: No Defeat is being made as a fully hand-drawn series, a deliberate stylistic choice that gives Ashina's blood-soaked battlefields a painterly, storybook weight.

The trailer shown at NYCC has not been released online yet, but the latest publicly available trailer leans into what made the game a phenomenon: brutal, balletic swordplay, the towering menace of Genichiro Ashina, and the quiet bond between a one-armed shinobi and the boy he is sworn to protect. Every frame is drawn by hand, with backgrounds that hold almost still while the characters carve through them — a look that sets the series apart from the glossier digital productions dominating the season.

The main cast brings heavyweight talent to Ashina:

  • Daisuke Namikawa (Toru Oikawa in Haikyu!!) as Wolf

  • Miyuki Satou as Kuro

  • Kenjiro Tsuda (Kento Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen) as Genichiro Ashina

Behind the scenes, Kenichi Kutsuna directs, with Takuya Satou writing the scripts and Takahiro Kishida designing the characters. The production has already proven itself on the big screen: a theatrical cut of Sekiro: No Defeat opened in Japanese cinemas in September 2026 and earned an extended run on strong demand. The eight-episode version is not simply the film recut — the production has promised additional scenes and material that make the episodic edition a distinct experience.

What is Sekiro: No Defeat about?

Sekiro: No Defeat adapts FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the 2019 action game that sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019. The game follows Wolf, a disgraced shinobi rescued from the brink of death, bound to protect a young lord of an ancient bloodline — the Divine Heir, Kuro. When Kuro is kidnapped by the Ashina clan, Wolf sets out on a perilous quest to rescue him, in a Sengoku-era Japan where death itself is only a temporary setback.

Crunchyroll's official synopsis:

The only hope lies in a kidnapped boy — the Divine Heir — and his silent protector: a loyal shinobi known only as Sekiro. This is the story of a lord and his retainer — and their quest to restore balance to a nation on the edge.
