Netflix dropped a big surprise during its Poguelandia festival as the cast got reunited to declare that Outer Banks Season 4 is happening, and apparently, fans freaked out over the news. The festival occurred the weekend before Season 3 premiered, so avid followers of the show were able to enter the new installment with a little more ease, knowing it would return.

Back in April 2020, the teen drama, created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, debuted to a positive response from the public, transporting viewers to an alternate world filled with division, romance, and intrigue. Many believed that the series arrived on television screens at the ideal moment and has remained there ever since. With Season 2 debuting in July 2021 and Season 3 in February 2023, Outer Bank Season 4 seemed inevitable well before filming for the third season had even concluded.

The American streaming giant can do two significant things for the imminent Outer Banks Season 4. The first one is to explain what transpired in that 18-month time jump and how the Pogues went from being the show's most-wanted band to the island's greatest stars. In addition, there is a brand-new treasure search centered on Blackbeard, the infamous pirate captain who undoubtedly had a special treasure on his ship, which is still up for grabs.

The series creators previously divulged that they intend for the show to run as long as it can but have not yet shared any details about what will the imminent new installment be about. As fans await more details, here is everything we know so far about the upcoming Outer Banks Season 4.

Outer Banks Season 4 Potential Release Date: When is it coming to Netflix?

Unfortunately, Netflix has not yet announced the official Outer Banks Season 4 release date. However, that hasn't stopped internet sleuths from the fandom from attempting to determine when the show will return.

With such a quick transition between the conclusion of filming and the release of the first episode for both Season 2 and Season 3, many fans are optimistic that Outer Banks Season 4 will follow a similar pattern. Filming for the imminent fourth installment is anticipated to conclude on December 15, 2023, suggesting an early 2024 release, possibly in the spring.

However, it is unknown to what extent Outer Banks was affected, if at all, by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, which could result in a release date delay and add Outer Banks to the list of shows affected by the strike. Fans are understandably eager to know when Outer Banks Season 4 will premiere, with numerous queries on social media.

Outer Banks Season 4 Cast: Who are the actors starring in the upcoming season?

As confirmed by the Outer Banks Season 4 preview released at the 2023 TUDUM Event, many familiar faces have already been verified to return for the next installment. Chase Stokes, who portrays John B. Routledge; Madelyn Cline, who portrays Sarah Cameron; Jonathan “J.D.” Daviss, who portrays Pope Heyward; Carlacia Grant, who portrays Cleo; Rudy Pankow, who portrays JJ Maybank; Austin North, who portrays Topper, and Drew Starkey, who portrays Rafe Cameron, will join Madison Bailey, who portrays Kiara Carrera.

The popular Netflix series also features Cullen Moss as Sheriff Shoupe, Julia Antonelli as Wheezie Cameron, Caroline Arapoglou as Rose Cameron, and E. Roger Mitchell as Pope's father Heyward. The fatalities of Sarah's father Ward Cameron, portrayed by Charles Esten, and John B's father, Big John, played by Charles Halford, are two of the most shocking revelations from Season 3. While Ward and Big John may not appear in new sequences in Outer Banks Season 4, there is a strong possibility that they will appear in flashbacks.

Fans can also expect some new names to join the Outer Banks Season 4 cast in the coming months. Speaking to TUDUM ahead of Season 3, series creators Shannon Burke, Josh Pate and Jonas Pate shared:

“The cast have been fast friends in real life pretty much from the very beginning, and it’s been so gratifying to see those connections deepen over the years we’ve worked on the show. They are truly Pogues for Life.”

With 18 episodes already under his belt, it is probable that Jonas Pate will return to the director's chair. Shannon, Josh and Jonas also serve as executive producers alongside Sunny Hodge and Aaron Miller. In addition, it has been confirmed that show composer Fil Eisler will return for Outer Banks Season 4, maintaining his record of working on every episode of the series.

Outer Banks Season 4 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?

Credit: Netflix

Although Netflix has not yet revealed an official synopsis for Outer Banks Season 4, it is safe to say that Season 3 left viewers with more questions than answers, prompting many to seek explanations as to how and why the latest installment ended in the manner it did. As a result, fans speculate heavily about what Season 4 may entail as they seek clarity.

What we do know is that Wes has asked the Pogues to help him find another treasure, which will likely serve as a major plot point for the majority of Outer Banks Season 4, as some important plot-lines were left unresolved, such as how Ward's death may affect Rafe, and the interpersonal relationships between characters have been so well explored in the first three installments of Outer Banks that it is reasonable to expect more of the same in Season 4.

Series creators Shannon Burke, Josh Pate and Jonas Pate previously revealed that they wanted to wrap up the show by Season 5. However, after the Outer Banks Season 4 announcement, the trio seems to be thinking bigger. Josh told Entertainment Weekly:

“I don't know if I could put a real number on it right now — how long it takes to get to that ending might expand, but we now know the shape of the end of the story. We're going to take it as long as we can, for sure.”

Ahead of Outer Banks Season 4 announcement, Josh also told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Blackbeard is part of Outer Banks lore, and so there’s just a lot of stuff we can work with out of that. It is going to be a part of it, but it’s not going to be a traditional Blackbeard-type tale, although we’re using elements of the mythology going forward. And as far as the time jump, we felt like we needed to get them out of school. The actors are a little older, and it was harder to keep them in high school. We just wanted to move them into a new phase in their lives and move them forward a little bit. The epilogue at the end of [episode] 10 was to set up those two things that we knew we wanted to do going forward.”
