As soon as the third season of The Umbrella Academy premiered on Netflix during the summer of 2022, fans began speculating if there would be a fourth season. Luckily, Netflix announced that The Umbrella Academy Season 4 is happening. However, it will be the series' final installment.
Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá of the same name, the series follows the lives of seven siblings with extraordinary abilities who were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and trained to save the world. The Umbrella Academy Season 4 is expected to pick up where the latest installment left off. To recall, the third season concluded with the siblings effectively preventing the apocalypse but also with the team finding themselves in a very different world from the one they were accustomed to.
The first three volumes of Gerard’s comic were adapted into the first two seasons of the show, and the fourth volume, titled Sparrow Academy, was announced in July 2020 but has not been released. Less clear is whether Season 3 covered the entirety of this volume or if the imminent installment will see the writers perform a Game of Thrones and write the series from scratch with no source material. The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Potential Release Date: When is it coming to Netflix?
No official The Umbrella Academy Season 4 release date is announced as of this writing. However, it is likely that the forthcoming installment will come out in late 2023 or early 2024.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 began filming in February 2023, and with only six episodes, it shouldn't be long before production concludes. Filming takes place in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.
Netflix officially confirmed The Umbrella Academy Season 4 on August 25, 2022, but it will also be the series’ last. Showrunner Steve Blackman said in a statement:
"I'm so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings' journey we began five years ago. But before we get to that conclusion, we've got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes."
Unlike many other Netflix titles, the release date schedule does not appear to follow a pattern. Season 1 premiered in February 2019, Season 2 at the end of July 2020, and Season 3 was released two years later, in mid-June 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Cast: Who are the actors starring in the upcoming season?
The series' main cast are expected to return for The Umbrella Academy Season 4, including Elliot Page as Viktor Hargreeves, aka Number Seven, Tom Hopper as Luther Hargreeves, aka Number One, David Castañeda as Diego Hargreeves, aka Number Two, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Alison Hargreeves aka Number Three, Aidan Gallagher as Five (no other name), and Robert Sheehan as Klaus Hargreeves aka Number Four. Colm Feore will also come back as Sir Reginald Hargreeve, the adoptive supervillain parent of the Umbrella Academy.
Also returning for The Umbrella Academy Season 4 is Adam Godley to provide vocal and facial movements of Pogo, the chimpanzee assistant of Reginald, while Ken Hall will continue to capture his motion on set. Ritu Arya will also reprise her role as Lila Pitts, the partner of Diego who has superpowers.
Meanwhile, at the conclusion of Season 3, it was divulged that some previously deceased characters had been resurrected. Jayme Hargreeves, aka Sparrow Number Six, played by Cazzie David, will return in The Umbrella Academy Season 4. Though Justin H. Min's Ben Hargreeves departed for the afterlife at the conclusion of Season 2, Min will reprise his role as the alternative universe version of Ben, the erstwhile Number Two of Sir Hargreeves' Sparrow Academy. Sloane Hargreeves, played by Genesis Rodriguez, vanished at the conclusion of Season 3, so the status of this Sparrow (who is also Luther/Number One's wife) is currently unknown.
A number of new characters are also set to be introduced in The Umbrella Academy Season 4. Drs. Gene and Jean Thibideau, a married small-town mayor and a conspiracy-obsessed community college professor, will be portrayed by Nick Offerman and Megan Mullaly, respectively. David Cross will also play Sy Grossman, a business proprietor. A mysterious waitress named Kailee and a lawyer named Cassius Newman will also reportedly be featured, but the actors who will portray these roles have yet to be announced.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?
Unfortunately, Netflix has not released official details about the plot of The Umbrella Academy Season 4. To recall, after resetting the universe, Season 3 concluded with the shocking revelation that the Umbrella Academy was now powerless. Many of them decide to take advantage of this new world in which they have no special abilities and construct normal lives for themselves.
Alison has been reunited with her daughter and her spouse from the past, Raymond "Ray" Chestnut (Yusuf Gatewood). However, the threat posed by Reginald and his deceased wife Abigail, who now govern the city where the Umbrellas and Sparrows reside, still looms in the distance. Without powers, our protagonists would be severely disadvantaged if they were required to confront their alien adoptive father. Season 3 also featured a post-credits scene depicting Ben on a train in Seoul, though it's unclear who this version of Ben is given that the Sparrow Ben was also brought back after the reset.
The Umbrella Academy Season 4 will likely expand upon these strengths while depicting the aftermath of the Hargreeves siblings losing their powers. More plot details are expected to be released in the coming months.
