What Happened in One Piece Episode 1070?
Kaido defeated Luffy on the roof of Onigashima’s Skull Dome in One Piece Episode 1070. However, Nami and the rest of the gang on the island couldn’t believe that the King of the Beasts had beaten their captain that easily.
Although crushed, Luffy started to hear their cries, making his heart beat most strangely. A smoke then formed around his body, hinting at the start of his Gear Fifth transformation in One Piece Episode 1071.

What is Luffy’s Gear Fifth?
Gear Fifth is the awakened form of the Gomu Gomu no Mi that makes its user’s body rubbery and gives it incredible strength. In this case, it’s Luffy.
Formerly known as Hito Hito ni Mi, anyone who has transformed into Gear 5 allows them to fight however they please, giving them increased strength and freedom. Hence, they become the Warrior of Liberation. This ability is even dubbed the “most ridiculous power in the world.”
In this transformation, Luffy’s heartbeat becomes a musical rhythm Zunesha described as the “Drums of Liberation.” His hair and clothes, except for his signature straw hat, belt, and sandals, turn white. His eyes also glow red with ring-like pupils, while white clouds float around his neck, like the clouds in his Gear 4 transformation.
The change also makes his eyebrows twirled and floating. But all of these will return to normal when his Gear Fifth deactivates.
