Two people remember the same night in completely opposite ways — and Ok Ja-yeon is the detective who has to decide which one of them is lying. New stills from The Perfect Lie introduce her character, Lee Hwa-young, ahead of the psychological thriller's premiere later this month.
The upcoming Friday-Saturday drama from MBC centers on a man and a woman who give conflicting accounts of the same memory and clash fiercely in their search for the truth. It is directed by Jo Young-min, whose previous work includes You and Everything Else.
Yoo Yeon-seok plays Min Joon-ho, a man known for telling the truth. Opposite him, Seo Hyun-jin plays Kang Ji-sun, a woman who insists that her version of events is the true one — and neither account can be reconciled with the other.
Ok Ja-yeon steps between them as Lee Hwa-young, a lieutenant in the Women and Juvenile Affairs Division at Sangcheon Police Station. Rational, responsible and committed to her principles, Lee Hwa-young persistently investigates the case behind Min Joon-ho and Kang Ji-sun's seemingly perfect first date, and through her eyes viewers will constantly find themselves questioning which of the two leads is lying.
The newly released stills show Lee Hwa-young deep in her investigation, with minimal makeup and her hair tied tightly back. Her expression looks composed, almost indifferent — but her gaze carries the sharp instincts of a detective determined to get to the heart of the case.
The role marks another strong turn for Ok Ja-yeon, who has built a reputation for stealing scenes in dramas such as Under the Queen's Umbrella and Mine. Her co-leads bring equal weight: Yoo Yeon-seok arrives off the success of When the Phone Rings, while Seo Hyun-jin — beloved for Another Miss Oh and most recently seen in The Trunk — continues her run of psychologically layered roles.
The setup gives the series an unusual engine for a thriller. Rather than asking who committed a crime, The Perfect Lie asks whose memory can be believed at all — and with both leads presented as credible, Lee Hwa-young's investigation becomes the audience's only way through, which the production team says is by design.
The production team said, "Lee Hwa Young is a character who pursues the truth amid the conflicting accounts of Min Joon Ho and Kang Ji Sun. She helps drive the story forward alongside the two leads and holds an important key to the plot." They added that Ok Ja-yeon has brought "her own distinctive touch to the principled Lee Hwa Young," further enhancing the drama, and asked viewers to look forward to her performance.
