The table is being set for the return of New Oishinbo, with the production team unveiling the songs that will open and close the new television anime. The update also expands the voice cast by six performers ahead of the series' 2027 broadcast, giving the gourmet drama a fuller ensemble before it reaches screens.

The announcement was revealed through the official website of New Oishinbo, which Crunchyroll credits as the source of the new details. That update pairs the musical news with character visuals for the newly announced performers, marking the latest step in the build-up to the revival.

Yui Makino performs the opening theme, PROMISE ME, while Skoop On Somebody performs the ending theme, Akashi. The two songs will bookend each episode of the new series, setting the tone for a story built around food, rivalry and the search for a perfect menu. No further details about the themes were revealed in the announcement.

The six newly announced cast members are:

  • Toru Furusawa (Nakago in Fushigi Yuugi) as Hideo Tanimura

  • Kosuke Echigoya (Shonosuke in YAIBA: Samurai Legend) as Tomio Tomii

  • Nobuo Tobita (Kamille Bidan in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam) as Taizo Ohara

  • Hiroshi Naka (Monkey D. Garp in One Piece) as Kyoichi Koizumi

  • Kyo Yaoya (Guo in Kowloon Generic Romance) as Kinue Arakawa

  • Hiroko Ushida (Tadako Kosaka in Liar Game) as Moriko Mitani

The additions join a main cast already led by Yohei Azakami as Shiro Yamaoka, Hitomi Sasaki as Yuko Kurita and Akio Otsuka as Yuzan Kaibara. Otsuka takes on the role of Yuzan from his late father, Chikao Otsuka, who voiced the character in the original television anime.

Kenichi Nishida directs the new series, with Takahiro Nagano handling series composition and Nozomi Kawashige designing the characters. SynergySP and Vega Entertainment are in charge of animation production, with Shin-Ei Animation credited with production of the series. The same team was already in place when the revival was first announced, and the new update keeps the focus on expanding its cast and music.

What is New Oishinbo About?

New Oishinbo is based on the long-running gourmet manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki. The manga began serialization in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits in October 1983 and has been on indefinite hiatus since May 2014, with 111 collected volumes and more than 135 million copies in circulation. Viz Media publishes the manga in English.

The story follows journalist Shiro Yamaoka, who works for the Tōzai News newspaper and is handed a daunting assignment for the paper's 100th anniversary. He is tasked with creating the Ultimate Menu, a model meal representing the height of Japanese cuisine, despite his reputation as a cynical reporter who lacks initiative. His sharp palate and deep knowledge of food make him the unlikely but ideal choice, and the project soon turns into a running contest with his father, the exacting gourmet Yuzan Kaibara.

The manga previously inspired a television anime from Shin-Ei Animation that ran for 136 episodes from October 1988 to March 1992. That series was later followed by two anime films and a live-action film, making the new series a return to a franchise that has been absent from television for more than three decades. The revival was announced during a stage event celebrating Shin-Ei Animation's 50th anniversary, and a teaser trailer followed in October.

New Oishinbo is set to broadcast in 2027, with no more specific date announced in the latest update. The new cast and theme songs arrive as the production continues its rollout, with the series now carrying a full musical identity and a growing ensemble around its central culinary rivalry.
