Netflix has announced that production for Season 3 of its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to begin this week in Vancouver, according to Production Weekly. The news, shared on May 20, 2025, has surprised fans, as Season 2, which recently wrapped filming, still lacks a confirmed release date. Adding to the excitement, Netflix revealed new cast members for Season 3, including high-profile actors from Severance and Marvel’s Runaways, signaling an ambitious finale for Aang’s journey as the Avatar, with the escalating war against the Fire Nation and the looming threat of Sozin’s Comet.

The live-action series, which follows 12-year-old Aang (Gordon Cormier) as he masters the four elements—water, earth, fire, and air—to restore balance to a war-torn world, has been a global hit since its debut on February 22, 2024. Season 1 garnered 41.1 million views in its first 11 days, securing the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s English-language TV chart and ranking in the Top 10 in 92 countries. Its blend of action, emotional storytelling, and cultural representation has captivated both longtime fans and new audiences.

Season 3 will feature the return of the core cast, including Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Netflix also announced new additions to the Season 3 cast, including Tramell Tillman, known for his role as Milchick in Severance, who will play King Bumi, the eccentric and powerful earthbender king of Omashu. James Sie, who voiced the Cabbage Merchant in the original animated series, joins as Oyaji, a character from the episode The Great Divide. Additionally, A Martinez, recognized from Days of Our Lives, will portray Pakku, the Northern Water Tribe’s waterbending master, while Jon Jon Briones plays the master swordsman Piandao, and Tantoo Cardinal takes on the role of Hama, a complex waterbender. These additions promise to enrich the Gaang’s journey with fresh and dynamic performances.

While anticipation builds for Season 3, excitement is equally high for Season 2, which will introduce the fan-favorite character Toph Beifong, played by Miya Cech. Known for her fierce, sarcastic personality and unparalleled earthbending skills, Toph is a blind warrior whose unique perspective and bold attitude made her a standout in the original animated series. Her casting was revealed at Netflix’s Geeked Week in 2024, generating significant buzz. Miya Cech has been working closely with a blindness community professional to ensure an authentic portrayal, reflecting the production’s commitment to cultural and disability representation. Toph’s arrival in Season 2 is expected to shake up the Gaang’s dynamics, bringing her signature wit and earthbending prowess to Aang’s quest to master the elements.

Executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani have teased that Season 3 will deepen character relationships and bring iconic moments from the animated series to life in live-action. Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Fire Lord Ozai, hinted at the high stakes, stating, “We’re just getting started.” The team plans to explore more of the Earth Kingdom and deliver fan-favorite scenes with a fresh perspective, while maintaining the cultural authenticity that defines the series. Showrunner Albert Kim emphasized the commitment to showcasing Asian and Indigenous characters in a vibrant, lived-in world, ensuring respectful representation across the board.

Although Season 3 plot details remain under wraps, the Season 1 finale’s focus on Azula’s rising influence and the fall of Omashu sets the stage for a climactic showdown, amplified by Sozin’s Comet, which enhances firebending power. The rapid confirmation of Season 3, despite Season 2’s unconfirmed release, has sparked excitement and curiosity about the Gaang’s next steps. Fans can expect Sokka’s strategic brilliance, Katara’s evolving waterbending mastery, and Aang’s journey to master new bending forms to take center stage.
