Gundam fans on both sides of the Pacific just got dates to circle. During the "GUNDAM Showcase 2026 @ NYC – Feat. SEED FREEDOM ZERO" panel at New York Comic Con on October 8, Bandai Namco Filmworks announced that Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, followed by a North American theatrical release in February 2027. The panel also debuted a new trailer and confirmed the English dub cast.
Bandai Namco Filmworks shared the news in an official press release timed to the NYCC panel, which featured the three English dub actors alongside Executive Producer Naohiro Ogata and Planning Producer Kaori Shida. In Japan, the film will be distributed by Bandai Namco Filmworks and Shochiku, with advance tickets going on sale October 16 at ¥1,900 — the first physical ticket includes an A5 clear file featuring the teaser visual. Exact North American dates and the distributor have not been announced yet, with more screening information promised later.
The English dub brings back the original voices fans know from the SEED series: Matthew Erickson as Shinn Asuka, Matt Hill as Kira Yamato, and Sam Vincent as Athrun Zala. All three appeared on the NYCC panel.

Here is the teaser visual:
FREEDOM ZERO is a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, the 2024 theatrical film that earned over 5 billion yen and 3 million admissions to become the highest-grossing theatrical release in Gundam history. Set in Cosmic Era 74, the story picks up after the collapse of Gilbert Dullindal's Destiny Plan: Cagalli, chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, establishes COMPS ("Compass"), a global peace-monitoring agency — and when the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen from COMPS' temporary base on Onogoro Island, Shinn and his comrades go into battle to recover it.
The story carries special significance for the franchise. It is based on a script written during SEED FREEDOM's production by series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda. "This is the final work completed by my late wife Chiaki Morosawa, the series composition writer," Fukuda said. He added: "This story shows the characters' yearnings that Chiaki was so eager to depict, and links together 'DESTINY' and 'FREEDOM.'"
The Japanese voice cast is stacked with returning favorites: Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn), Soichiro Hoshi (Kira), Akira Ishida (Athrun), Rie Tanaka (Lacus), Nanako Mori (Cagalli), Maaya Sakamoto (Lunamaria), Houko Kuwashima (Agnes), Tomokazu Seki (Yzak), Akira Sasanuma (Dearka), Kotono Mitsuishi (Murrue), and Takehito Koyasu (Mu). Daisuke Ono joins as Leonard Valway, making his first animated appearance after previously appearing in the "Moonlight Valkyrie" bonus novel. "My connection to 'GUNDAM SEED' goes back exactly 20 years, to 'STARGAZER,'" Ono said.
The teaser visual centers on Shinn Asuka, the protagonist of SEED DESTINY, and the film introduces a new mobile suit — the GOUF Ignited Custom — alongside returning favorites Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice.
"This story shows the characters' yearnings," and for fans with lingering questions, Akira Ishida has a promise: "I'm sure some of you were left wondering what on earth happened between 'DESTINY' and 'FREEDOM.' Well, 'SEED FREEDOM ZERO' is here to answer all of that and put those nagging questions to rest. Don't miss it!" Kenichi Suzumura put it more simply: "Watch 'ZERO' and you'll want to watch 'FREEDOM' again."
As a bonus, Bandai Namco opened the "MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED Series Grand Prix 2026" fan vote on October 8, letting fans vote on memorable scenes featuring 55 characters through November 30, with results coming in December 2026.
