After making history with the 2019 South Korean thriller film called Parasite, director Bong Joon Ho has teamed up with Twilight actor Robert Pattinson for his eighth feature dubbed as Mickey 17. The upcoming movie is based on Edward Ashton’s Micky7 book, which revolves around a clone who wants to keep his other clone self alive and safe.
The film adaptation of Edward’s novel was first announced to be in development in January 2022, with Joon Ho named as its writer and director. Production for Mickey 17 kicked off at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in South East England, on August 2, 2022, and was completed in December 2022.
Though Joon Ho has never exclusively worked in science fiction, his work in the genre is largely responsible for putting him on the international filmmaking map. As a matter of fact, his cult-favorite monster film called The Host has been widely regarded as one of the greatest modern movies of all time, boasting genuine scares and awe-inspiring large-scale spectacle. Mickey 17 Release Date: When Will The Movie Be Available On Theaters?
Director Bong Joon Ho is inviting fans to enter the scientific world of Mickey 17 when it officially opens in theaters on March 29, 2024. Though the imminent film is still a year away from its official release, it has already been verified that it will be released in theaters, so the only way to watch it will be to visit your local cinemas.
As of this writing, no plans for a streaming release have been announced yet. However, it can be recalled that Bong Joon Ho has previously collaborated with Netflix to be the sole distributor of Okja. Since Mickey 17 is a Warner Bros. production, it is highly likely that the forthcoming movie will be released on Max.
Mickey 17 Cast: Who Are The Actors Included In The Movie?
Most, if not all, fans are aware that Robert Pattinson got busy filming for his version of The Batman. However, the former boyfriend of Kristen Stewart reportedly still has time to work with director Bong Joon Ho for Mickey 17.
Aside from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire actor, other stars appearing in the forthcoming American science fiction film include The Avengers regular Mark Ruffalo, Hereditary actor Toni Collette, Star Wars: Episode IX-The Rise of Skywalker actress Naomi Ackie and Minari star Steven Yeun. Since the plot details of the imminent movie are being kept under wraps, we still do not have much information as to who is playing who in Mickey 17.
However, avid followers of the novel have speculated that Toni will portray a recruiter named Gwen Johansen in in Mickey 17 while Naomi plays Nasha Adjaya, the love interest of Robert’s character, Mickey Barnes. Steven will reportedly play Berto, while Mark will portray a Hieronymous Marshall.
For the first time since 2019, Bong Joon Ho is set to return to the director’s chair for Mickey 17. Fans are immensely thrilled to see what Joon Ho has in store for them after taking home the gold in every sense of the word with the Academy Award-winning movie Parasite. The acclaimed legend will also write and produce the film.
Other Mickey 17 crew also include Snowpiercer costume designer Catherine George, The Favourite production designer Fiona Crombie, Life is Beautiful editor Jinmo Yang, Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful Truths cinematographer Darius Khondji, and Squid Game composer Jung Jae Il. Joon Ho will produce the Robert Pattinson-led film alongside Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Garder, and Dooho Choi, with Marianne Jenkins as its executive producer. The Matrix: Reloaded’s Dan Glass was hired as the VFX supervisor.
Mickey 17 Plot: What Is The Upcoming Film About?
Plot details of the upcoming Mickey 17 movie remain scarce as of this moment. What is concrete is that the film will be a loose adaption of Edward Ashton’s Mickey7 novel.
Also, it remains unclear as to why director Joon Ho decided to change the title to Mickey 17 instead of sticking to the original title of the novel. Fans would not know for sure until the film gets closer to its release date. Below is the official synopsis of the Mickey7 book:
“Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it. On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein. Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7. That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.”
Mickey 17 Trailer: Is There A Teaser For The Imminent Movie?
Warner Bros. Pictures released a 30-second teaser on December 6, 2022. All fans saw, however, is Mickey presumable in a tank where clones are kept in stasis, awakening upon the death of his prior clone.
