The God of Mischief has been a fan-favorite since he made his very first appearance in Thor and from then on, his character grew right before everyone's eyes to being one with the biggest character developments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. His own titular series started with a simple slip through the Tesseract and it ended up better than anyone else can ever think of! Loki Season 2 finally reveals Loki's glorious purpose!

From the start, all Loki wanted was to be a king on the throne. Loki Season 1 started with Episode 1 titled Glorious Purpose where Loki was apprehended by the Time Variance Authority for overriding his fate in Endgame as he escaped through the Tesseract when he was not supposed to do so. While at the TVA, Mobius asks Loki what his glorious purpose really is and this led to him being on the run as he meets his variant, Sylvie. The first season ended with the timelines branching because Sylvie killed He Who Remains, the one who controls the Sacred Timeline.

Going full circle, Loki Season 2 finale is also titled Glorious Purpose which reveals Loki's true purpose -- on a throne he always dreamed of, however, it was probably not the one he pictured. As Loki got ahold of control over his time slip, he got to go back to various points in time in hopes of changing the future of the Loom breaking apart which he later realized, through a conversation with He Who Remains, was a failsafe that needs to be taken down. Loki destroys the loom and as a result, the branches started dying. Finally realizing his glorious purpose, he grabs the branches one by one and does the weaving of his own. As Loki sat at the throne of He Who Remains, he binds the branches and becomes the beating heart of existence -- similar to the Norse mythology's Yggdrasil, the tree of life.

The ending of Loki Season 2 leaves the return of the God of Mischief in a gray area. Yes, he is alive and may be for the rest of the narrative of the MCU. And no, while he is alive, he has to remain on his post and continue with his glorious purpose of keeping the branches alive. This brings the return of Tom Hiddleston's Loki unclear although it is possible that he could play a part in either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Avengers: Secret Wars but as always, noting is confirmed unless Marvel Studios confirms it or makes it a surprise.

Perhaps the other variants of Loki could return, though. There is Sylvie who finally embraces her free will and being a powerful variant, she may return somewhere else in the near future. There is also Kid Loki who appeared in Loki Season 1 Episode 5 who may become part of the Young Avengers. The finale of Loki Season 2 is already a proper send-off to Tom Hiddleston's Loki with how he finally got his throne and found his glorious purpose.
