In case you missed it, Guillermo del Toro confirmed he was going to work on a Star Wars film that was ultimately cancelled. Since then, the Pan's Labyrinth filmmaker shared an interesting tease about the failed project, claiming it was supposed to focus on Jabba the Hutt. Now, del Toro is opening up about the movie, admitting he was disappointed that Lucasfilm and Disney decided to pull the plug on the film.
Back in September, writer David S. Goyer revealed that he wrote the script for a Star Wars project. Del Toro later confirmed details about the film, claiming that the letters ‘J’ and BB’ were major clues. It didn't take long for fans to deduce that the movie would have focused on Jabba the Hutt.
So was it truly a Jabba film? Del Toro recently spoke to Collider where he confirmed everything.
"We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy," he said. Del Toro then discussed what happened to the project.
"We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it's not my property, it's not my money, and then it's one of those 30 screenplays that goes away," he said. "Sometimes I'm bitter, sometimes I'm not. I always turn to my team and say, 'Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.' You can never be ungrateful with life."
It's unfortunate that the Jabba movie didn't happen. On the other hand, the film wouldn't have fit well with the ongoing Star Wars projects, especially in the MandoVerse which takes place long after Jabba's death. Nevertheless, it's a good thing that del Toro is taking the rejection in the best possible way.
Who is Jabba the Hutt?
In the original Star Wars films, Jabba was a formidable crime lord hailing from Tatooine. His lavish throne room often features enslaved alien women, a testament to his opulence. He placed a bounty on the infamous smuggler Han Solo who is captured by Boba Fett and encased in carbonite. After capturing Leia Organa, Jabba meets his match in Luke Skywalker who arrives to liberate his friends.

In a climactic showdown, Leia seizes the opportunity to confront Jabba's malevolence. Using the chain that binds her as a weapon, she strangles Jabba, ultimately ending his reign of terror.
Sadly, we won't get to see Jabba's rise to power but that doesn't mean there won't be more Star Wars projects in the future. The next Star Wars series is set to be Skeleton Crew and the show is expected to premiere on Disney+ in January 2024.
