The collaboration between Fortnite developer Epic Games and Disney has produced numerous in-game integrations over the years. Iconic characters from Star Wars, Marvel, and other Disney properties have appeared as skins and cosmetics, while special events and creator tools have allowed players to experience franchise-inspired content directly within the battle royale title. This partnership, fueled by Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games, aims to expand beyond cosmetics into broader entertainment experiences.

Bloomberg reported that Epic Games is developing an extraction-style shooter inspired by Arc Raiders featuring Disney characters, with a targeted November launch as the first major new title from the collaboration. In the unconfirmed project, players would take on the role of a Disney character, engaging in combat against enemies while working to reach an extraction point.

Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games and Fortnite is expected to fund at least two additional games beyond the initial project. An early build of the second title drew only middling feedback during internal evaluations. Resources earmarked for the third game were redirected to bolster the first two after Disney voiced concerns over Epic’s slower-than-expected release schedule.

An Epic Games spokesperson described the reported details as "not reflective of the ambitions of the Disney collaboration." The company is known for maintaining aggressive timelines throughout its development cycles.

"We've heavily moved developers onto projects with releases approaching, while smaller prototyping teams are working on further-off projects," the spokesperson added.

A Disney spokesperson highlighted the company’s commitment to a "long-term collaboration" with Epic Games to build a "transformational games and entertainment" universe.

The deepening ties between Disney and Epic Games, along with Disney’s substantial equity stake, have sparked speculation that the entertainment giant could eventually seek to acquire Epic Games and its flagship Fortnite. Such a move would give Disney greater control over a platform with hundreds of millions of users and allow faster integration of its vast intellectual property into interactive experiences. However, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney retains majority ownership, meaning any buyout would depend on his willingness to sell. These theories remain purely speculative, with no official indications from either company.

In a related development, Epic Games recently conducted substantial layoffs impacting more than 1,000 employees. The cuts, announced in March amid a reported downturn in Fortnite engagement, affected various teams across the company. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that personnel working on the unannounced Disney-related projects were among those impacted. The restructuring also included over $500 million in additional cost savings through reduced contracting, marketing, and open roles. Despite the layoffs, both Epic and Disney have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to the long-term partnership and its ambitious goals.

These reported developments highlight the high stakes involved in the Epic-Disney alliance as the companies navigate development challenges, internal reviews, and shifting priorities. While the extraction shooter and additional projects remain unconfirmed by official channels, they underscore Fortnite’s ongoing evolution as more than a battle royale game. The collaboration continues to blend gaming with broader entertainment ambitions, potentially reshaping how audiences interact with beloved franchises. As Epic seeks to revitalize Fortnite momentum, the Disney relationship stands as a key pillar in its strategy moving forward.
