Former Rockstar Dev Wants GTA 6 to Be “Smaller But More Densely"

A former Rockstar developer hopes that GTA 6 will have a “smaller but more densely packed location”.

In the last ten years, Grand Theft Auto V players have spent many hours travelling across the massive open map of Los Santos. With a measurement of 75.84 square kilometers, the city which is loosely based on Los Angeles, California completely dominates San Andreas and other GTA maps as the biggest Grand Theft Auto world map. GTA 5 would hold the record of the largest open-world map ever created by Rockstar, until the developer's other major franchise sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, was launched. Nonetheless, GTA 5's is pretty vast, and quite often, a lengthy drive (or ride, flight, or sail), and despite Rockstar's efforts to popular the entire map, some areas are quite empty and not worth exploring.

Now, one former Rockstar developer, Tony Gowland (whose own studio just launched Dungeon Golf), believes that the highly-anticipated GTA 6 should be "smaller and denser" than some of its predecessors. The Rockstar developer, whose credits include the original Red Dead Redemption, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, and Chinatown Wars, recently told PCGamesN:

In terms of what I’m hoping for, I personally would like it to bring in a little bit in terms of size of the world. I think a smaller but more densely packed location would maybe bring back some of that memorable navigation that I loved from the original.

Speaking about the catastrophic leaks that hit the GTA 6 project last Fall, which shared around 100 GB of content leaked from within Rockstar Games and shared around the web, Gowland said:

The only footage I’ve seen is a couple of bits of the leaked stuff, and I stopped watching pretty quickly. I found that really heartbreaking for the team, to have all their hard work first shown to the world in such a janky and unfinished state, and I’d much rather wait for an official trailer to get really hyped.

GTA 6, which hasn't officially been revealed by Rockstar Games, will reportedly be set in a modernized, re-imagined version of the Miami-inspired Vice City.

How big is GTA 6's map?

According to Redditor tusstaster, GTA 6's map could be way larger than GTA 5. This information doesn't officially come from Rockstar and other party associated with the project, so take this with a grain of salt. The user shared a map based off details such as coordinates, gameplay footage, images, and road signs, and as you can see on his post, the map is way larger than Los Santos, around three times its sized, and features areas called Homestead, Little Haiti, and Rockridge. There's also Venetian Isle, and other small islands as well as major highways such as I-77 and I-197.

Another concept map has also been shared online, comparing GTA 5's map to what many fans believe GTA 6's map will be.

Of course, it would make sense for Rockstar to make the world of GTA 6 bigger and better than GTA 5, but it needs to be reiterated that there's yet to be any confirmation about these concept maps and other rumors, so there's no way for us to tell exactly how big GTA 6's map will be until Rockstar officially reveals it.
