The highly-anticipated third and final installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is set to deliver expansive exploration and iconic moments from the original classic, including visits to key locations like Wutai and the chance to take to the skies aboard the Highwind airship.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, director Naoki Hamaguchi shared exciting details about the project's direction. He emphasized that the team is building on the foundation established in Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, aiming to create a distinct experience rather than a simple continuation of the same gameplay style.

"[Wutai is] one of the main locations," Hamaguchi explained. "Yuffie's made a very prominent appearance, stating her case about her homeland. So if Wutai's not featured, I think the fans are going to yell at me." This confirms that the war-torn nation of Wutai, absent from Rebirth, will play a central role in the concluding chapter, giving players the opportunity to explore its culture, landscapes, and narrative significance tied to Yuffie Kisaragi's storyline.

Hamaguchi further highlighted the importance of air travel, noting that piloting the Highwind will be "a very large part of the third installment." This feature promises to expand on the freedom of world traversal, allowing players to soar over vast regions and access new areas in ways that evoke the original game's sense of adventure.

"Because it is a major element in the game, I won't go deep into details," Hamaguchi said regarding the opening sections. "But considering that toward the end of Rebirth, we're in the Forgotten City--and in the original you would go into Icicle Inn from there--I guess that hints at how the third installment will begin. I hope the players will look forward to it." This suggestion points to a continuation from the emotional events in the Forgotten City, transitioning into colder, northern territories like Icicle Inn and potentially the Great Glacier, setting the stage for the late-game journey toward the finale.

Additional teases from Hamaguchi include the return of Rocket Town, which was notably omitted from Rebirth, and hints at a journey into space, broadening the scope beyond the planet's surface. The Great Glacier is also expected to feature prominently as a challenging and expansive area.

Hamaguchi chose not to confirm or deny whether Chocobo breeding would return in the final chapter. However, he did reveal that one aspect related to Chocobos will be "a little different than Rebirth." This modest adjustment is likely to bring new features or refinements to the popular Chocobo-riding and interaction system, ensuring the trilogy continues to evolve and surprise players with each installment.

The development team has retained much of the staff from Rebirth, ensuring continuity in quality and vision while introducing new gameplay elements to make the third part stand out. Hamaguchi expressed optimism about the project's progress, noting that the foundation of the gameplay is already in place.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has an official title, though it has not been announced yet. While no release date or platforms have been confirmed for the finale, the trilogy's momentum continues with the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Xbox on June 3, 2026. Preorders for the physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition include a new Magic: The Gathering promo card featuring Zack Fair with variant art by Tetsuya Nomura, adding a collectible bonus for fans bridging the worlds of Final Fantasy and trading card gaming.
