A new Dragon Ball anime series was announced at New York Comic-Con 2023. Though many get excited about this, it is quickly surrounded by a lot of questions. Titled Dragon Ball Daima, it will tell a brand-new story from the world of Goku and the Z-Fighters, but is it canon?
Created by the great Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, the anime serves as the 40th anniversary of the franchise, adapted by Toei Animation. But as it’s about to make a big change for Kakarot and his fellow Z-Warriors, will it be an official part of the original story? If it is, what part of the timeline it takes place? Here, we break down what we know.
Is Dragon Ball Daima part of the original story?
Despite telling a new story and not being part of the manga or anime before, Dragon Ball Daima will be every inch canon. Aside from being written and designed by Toriyama himself, it will serve as the latest canon entry to the franchise after the release of Dragon Ball: Super Hero in 2022.
As seen in the trailer, the new series canonically takes place in Goku’s life. However, there may be a change in the future, as the mangaka is known for taking his characters or storylines out of the canon after the series runs for a few years. But as nothing is confirmed yet, and details about this new anime remain locked and key, it can’t be denied that Dragon Ball Daima is part of the Dragon Ball world.
What part of the timeline does Dragon Ball Daima take place?
In a statement, Toriyama revealed that Dragon Ball Daima would unfold the mystery in the Dragon Ball universe. Hence, just like how Dragon Ball Super took place ten years before Dragon Ball Z ended, there are theories that Daima might have occurred before Super.
The preview features a mysterious character who is watching the events that happened in the Dragon Ball world in the past, and the most recent scene comes from the Majin Buu arc. It also shows Goku and Vegeta, though without Beerus and Whis.
So, there may be a possibility that this is also set before the events of the Battle of Gods. It’s also assumed to take place after the defeat of Majin Buu. If these assumptions are true, Dragon Ball Daima has a huge gap to explore before Dragon Ball Super happens.
What is Dragon Ball Daima about?
Toei Animation and Toriyama are yet to reveal the official synopsis of Dragon Ball Daima. But based on the trailer, it will see Goku and the Z-Fighters returning to their young selves after the new villain uses Dragon Balls to do so. Aside from being kids again, this change has stripped them of the power they have worked hard to acquire following years of training.
Dragon Ball Daima is scheduled for release in the Fall of 2024. With these unanswered questions, they only make fans more excited for this new anime.
