The Marvels has lost its place as one of the least expensive MCU movies since 2015’s Ant-Man. The release of the much-anticipated sequel to Captain Marvel is right around the corner, and many Marvel fans are hyped about it. As the release of the movie comes closer, more information regarding it continues to be revealed by both Disney and Marvel, including its surprising budget.

According to Forbes, Disney has recently revealed the budget for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film during a disclosed company filings. As it turns out, the production of the superhero film cost a staggering $270 million, which is $140 million more than what Vanity Fair reported during its interview with the director of The Marvels, Nia DaCosta.

After the latest budget reveal, the movie has become one of the most expensive Marvel projects of Phase 5, leaving behind Guardians of the Galaxy ($250M), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($200M), and the limited Disney+ series Secret Invasion ($212M). Now, The Marvels is considered the most expensive, non-Avengers movie that has been made by Marvel Studios. Despite the $55 million subsidy the UK government gave to The Marvels, the budget for the movie still comes in at a whopping $219 million.

As per Forbes, this means that The Marvels must gross at least $439.6 million at the box office in order to become successful since studios receive only half of the total theater takings. However, it has been rough lately in the current box office, so it might very well be easier said than done. Apart from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, superhero movies have been facing some trouble getting the desired outcome in 2023, with The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as Blue Beetle having a hard time at the box office.
