The 2019 movie Detective Pikachu saw commercial success as the first live-action Pokémon film. But despite faring well at the box office, its director, Rob Letterman, revealed one thing that made the movie “complex” and something he lamented until today.
Based on the 2016 video game of the same title, Detective Pikachu was the first time that the audience saw a universe where the cute and colorful little Pokémons co-exist with people. But knowing there are over a thousand of these collectible monsters, Letterman wished his film only featured fewer of them.
In an interview with The Direct, the filmmaker said he wished they had fewer Pokémon to choose from when asked if there was something he would like to make in the live-action film. He remembered so many pocket monsters in the movie that made it “so complex.”
“You know, I just remember, it was a while ago; we had so many Pokémon characters in that thing,” he said. “I think I remember wishing we had less, not wishing there was one more. There were so many; it was so complex.”

Will there be Detective Pikachu 2?
Deadline reported in March that Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel was in talks to direct Detective Pikachu 2, with Chris Galleta working on the script. Though there are no words yet on the sequel’s details, insiders claimed Ryan Reynolds might return to play a major role after the previous film ended with Pokémon turning into his human form. For starters, the Deadpool 3 star played the role of Detective Pikachu in the first movie.
So, how about Letterman? The director revealed he was once attached to the sequel as soon as the first film came out, but the pandemic had changed everything. With no updates about his role, he just “kind of moved on.” Hence, he has no idea what Detective Pikachu 2 will be about and where it’s going.
Detective Pikachu may tell a different story but may still be based on the franchise’s world. With a lot of source materials waiting to be adapted, there’s an array of possibilities to happen.
