Deadpool & Wolverine Star Ryan Reynolds Addresses His Possible Return to the MCU

Ryan Reynolds has been asked numerous times about what's next for his character after Deadpool & Wolverine, but he has always been coy about it.

Deadpool & Wolverine has taken the world by storm, as evidenced by its over $800 million global box office earnings. Not only that, but it has also become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time domestically. With this success, fans naturally want to know if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will return to reprise their iconic roles on the big screen. Though nothing has been said about their next possible appearance despite the upcoming Avengers movies, Doomsday and Secret Wars, Reynolds has addressed his potential comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with Collider, Reynolds understands that fans want to know what will happen next to Wade Wilson after the positive reception Deadpool & Wolverine receives. However, though he clarifies that he’s not retiring yet, he has no idea if he will be seen as the Merc with a Mouth again, as the threequel serves as a complete experience that isn’t meant to be a commercial for any other MCU movies.

I would say that Shawn and I have been pretty clear, I think, in the most loving way, because talk about the greatest uptown problem any human beings could have is a studio like that saying, ‘What’s next?’ Or ‘How can we make something else?’ But this movie was made as a complete experience. It wasn’t meant to be a commercial for another movie. It wasn’t meant to be any of that stuff.

The Canadian actor revealed he had fun making a complete movie like Deadpool & Wolverine. Though he expressed his interest in knowing if he would wear his Deadpool suit again, like fans, he, too, doesn’t know what the future holds. Hence, he is also waiting for what may transpire.

“Honestly, right in this moment, I have no idea if I’ll ever wear that Deadpool suit again — I hope I do — but I don’t know,” he continued. “Right now’s the time to just kind of hang it up for a bit and see what happens next.”

Will Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool return to the MCU?

After Deadpool & Wolverine ends, it remains to be seen if Deadpool will return to the MCU. However, it’s good to note that the movie dropped an intriguing scene about Wade’s possible fate after a scene from the future saw him heavily injured while lying in the crying Thor’s arms. Many assume it’s a scene for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, teasing Deadpool’s possible involvement in the fight against the new villain, Doctor Doom, who the returning Marvel veteran Robert Downey Jr. will play.

If he returns, Deadpool may play a pivotal role in The Multiverse Saga. After repairing his universe and saving it from being annihilated, he has become a crucial part of the multiverse. Though he’s from Earth-10005, he has crossed over to Earth-616, as seen in his scene with Happy Hogan. So, as Secret Wars and Avengers: Doomsday are set to explore the threats to the multiverse, there’s no way for Deadpool not to come back.

Though Reynolds and Jackman often play coy when answering questions about their possible return after Deadpool & Wolverine, not giving definite answers may hint that they may reprise their roles one way or another. Well, they just made their MCU debut, so it’s not far that they will be part of Marvel Studios’ future projects.
