Deadpool & Wolverine features several surprising cameos, from Wesley Snipes’ Blade to Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Channing Tatum’s Gambit, and more. It also sees Chris Evans’ return in a Marvel Cinematic Universe project after his last appearance in Anthony and Joe Russo’s 2019 Avengers: Endgame. However, just when viewers thought he would don Captain America’s suit, he unexpectedly yelled “flame on” as he took the skies as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. As nobody saw it coming, Evans opens up about his return after almost 20 years.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Evans admitted he was so “excited” to reprise his role as the Human Torch after Tim Story’s 2005 Fantastic Four and the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He then revealed that Ryan Reynolds personally texted him to ask if he would be interested in reprising a role from some 20 years ago in Deadpool & Wolverine.

“I said, ‘Oh my God! Of course!’” he stated. “Honestly, Ryan might be the only guy that I would've done it for because he's just got the Midas touch.”

Evans praised Reynolds for his self-awareness, which made him almost “invincible.” He admired his ability to make a joke before viewers could create one. So, the veteran Marvel actor found Reynolds the only person who could revisit a character and make it work perfectly.

“Ryan's humor makes just about everything work, so you feel an automatic sense of safety,” he continued.

Chris Evans Talks About Filming Deadpool & Wolverine

Back in March, Karan Soni, who plays the role of Dopinder, teased that a lot of people traveled to London to film Deadpool & Wolverine. By the looks of it, Evans was one of them after he revealed that he had to fly in real quick to film his scenes for a couple of days and fly out after. If some stars would find it hard, it was no biggie for the former Avengers star.

“For me, it was pretty easy,” he continued.

He also talked about wearing his blue Fantastic Four suit again. But compared to the costume he donned back in the 2000s, the new one was “slightly” improved.

“Primarily because where we find Johnny, he's meant to be a little more rundown, so the costume didn't have to be pristine,” he explained.

Evans explained that Marvel was still finding its footing when it did the Fantastic Four movies back then. So, at the time, everything had to be precise. They even held a lot of meetings and shared numerous opinions to get things done perfectly. After that previous experience, everything came easy when they did the threequel.

“This was a little more like, ‘Yeah, we know it. We’ve seen it,’” he added.

Chris Evans Recalls Doing Fantastic Four

Before Evans became Captain America, he was first seen as Johnny Storm / the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies from the now-defunct 20th Century Studios. For him, playing that role was “nothing but fond memories” and was a “big chapter” of his life.

“I was 23 when I did the first one, and it was my first bigger studio film,” he revealed.

Though Evans had already done several movies before, it was nothing at that big scale. He even described his previous roles as “little milestones” and “little corners” that he rounded. However, when he did Fantastic Four, he felt he made a major turn that brought him to the next level of his career.

“I loved working with the people that were on that film. I loved the role,” he expressed. “It was nothing but love and affection for that time.”

Deadpool & Wolverine Gives a Nod to Wesley Snipes and Ryan Reynolds' Feud Two Decades Ago

True to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s words, Deadpool & Wolverine becomes a vessel for bringing back long-dead Marvel characters, like Evans’ the Human Torch and Hugh Jackman’s Logan. This not only ends the timeline of Fox’s Marvel movies but also allows Marvel Studios to create new ones. It’s also a proper sendoff for the characters the studio once brought to life.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
