Deadpool & Wolverine has built incredible hype that it has become the most anticipated summer movie of the year. For one, it will see the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, seven years after his supposed send-off film Logan. However, despite the huge excitement for his return, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige advises Jackman not to “come back” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
Feige was the most nervous about Jackman’s return as Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine. He even warned the actor not to ruin his emotional finale movie, advising him not to come back and undo his character's death.
“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back,’” Feige recalled telling Jackman while talking to Empire. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with Logan. That’s not something we should undo.’”
However, to preserve the epic storytelling of the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy, a different side of the adamantium-clawed mutant will be seen in Deadpool & Wolverine. So, though Jackman had already retired from the role, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2017 that his character’s demise was the reason “to do no more after it,” doing another take on the character was what he actually yearned for.
“I was about an hour into the drive,” he recalled. “And that question came into my head: ‘What do I want to do?’”
From that moment, he knew he wanted to do Deadpool & Wolverine. He then drove for another hour but couldn’t stop thinking about it. So, he got out of the car and called Ryan Reynolds to accept the role once more.
“‘Ryan, if you’ll have me, I’m in,’” he added.
Wolverine Almost Donned the Blue-and-Yellow Costume in The Wolverine
In the same interview, Jackman revealed that reprising his iconic role in Deadpool & Wolverine gave his character several fresh opportunities, including wearing the iconic blue-and-yellow costume. And though it would be the first time he would be seen wearing it on the big screen, it was almost introduced in the 2013 The Wolverine.
“We almost did it in The Wolverine,” he said.
So, the moment he wore it in the Deadpool threequel, he couldn't help but ask himself why they never did it before. As the most comic-accurate costume, it looked and felt right for him, making him the real Wolverine.
“There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me,” he continued.
Though the yellow-blue costume wasn’t seen in The Wolverine, the yellow-brown suit was part of the film. However, it was deleted from the theatrical cut.
Deadpool & Wolverine is slated to premiere on July 26, 2024. Fans may have seen a lot of iterations of Wolverine in several X-Men movies before, but Jackman himself teased a never-before-seen Logan will lead the threequel opposite Reynolds’ Wade Wilson.
