There’s great anticipation surrounding the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine now that it will finally see the Merc with a Mouth working with the X-Men mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These two are known for being one of Marvel comics’ greatest frenemies with their decade-long history, starting from their involvement in the Weapon X program. Now, with their much-awaited reunion happening on the big screen, it’s no surprise that it has become the most anticipated summer movie of the year.

Fandango recently held its annual Moviegoing Trends & Insights study and revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine had topped its list of the most anticipated summer movies of the year. The result came just in time for the National Association of Theatre Owners’ annual convention, CinemaCon, which would take place on April 8-11 in Las Vegas, giving exhibitors a preview of what would come.

The ticketing company surveyed over 6,000 moviegoers, split between general ticket buyers and the site’s users, to know their attitudes and behaviors when going to the cinemas. It also studied the partakers’ future moviegoing intent and learned that over half of the moviegoers surveyed planned to see four or more movies in theaters this summer. Their motivation also varied from anticipating the upcoming release of blockbuster films to spending quality time with their family and friends and beating the summer heat.

With the return of the big franchises to the big screen, like Deadpool & Wolverine, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Despicable Me 4, these films have led the top 10 most anticipated summer movies list. It also includes A Quite Place: Day One, Inside Out 2, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, The Watchers, The Fall Guy, The Garfield Movie, and Borderlands.

Talking about the result, Fandango EVP Jerramy Hainline revealed that 2024 continued the positive momentum that started in 2023, proving that fans still loved going to the cinemas for a theatrical experience. With Deadpool, Bad Boys, and Despicable Me leading the list, it just showed that moviegoers were eager to see their favorite characters and franchises return to the big screen this summer.

This past year underscored consumers’ appetite to watch different types of content in theaters, in addition to beloved films. This was evident with the success of concert films from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, and our study uncovers that moviegoers want even more diverse content to experience on the big screen, which we think is a great opportunity for exhibitors.
