The X-Men are now making their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Disney acquired its rights from 20th Century Fox. As it will officially begin in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, former X-Men movies filmmaker Simon Kinberg weighs in on this new film and expresses his excitement over Marvel Studios’ plans for the franchise, knowing he can’t explore these characters as the company could.
In an interview with Comicbook to promote his new Apple TV+ mystery series Sugar, Kinberg revealed his thoughts about Deadpool & Wolverine. After producing the previous Deadpool movies and some X-Men films, the British-American director also serves as the executive producer of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s new film under Marvel Studios.
“It's a good question because it's outside of actually being inside the process of making anything,” he said. “The truth is, with the Marvel movies, if I answer anything, I'm just afraid there's gonna be a sniper's little red dot on my forehead, and my children will be fatherless.”
So, to avoid spilling anything, Kinberg played safe and only talked about being a big fan of Jackman and the work he had done for playing Wolverine. The 50-year-old directed several X-Men films with the Australian actor in them, like X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand, among others. That said, he revealed his excitement about seeing him as the adamantium-clawed hero again in the new MCU movie.
“I know that for him, and for Ryan [Reynolds] and for Shawn [Levy], exploring some aspects that perhaps we haven't explored before, I would imagine, is appealing,” he continued.
Who Among the X-Men characters will appear in Deadpool & Wolverine?
Marvel Studios has remained mum about the much-awaited cameos happening in Deadpool & Wolverine, though a lot has been teased about it. Thankfully, the leaked set photos and the movie’s teaser itself have confirmed who among the X-Men characters will be seen in the film.
As the crossover between the Fox franchise and the MCU finally happens, Aaron Stanford returns to reprise his role as Pyro. Sabertooth and Toad also appear, though it remains to be seen if new actors play them or if Liv Schreiber and Evan Jongkeit return. Colossus, Yukio, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead also join the MCU, played by Stefan Kapicic, Shioli Kutsuna, and Brianna Hildebrand. In addition, there are rumors that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen may return as Professor X and Magneto.
