Deadpool 3 Director Reveals Marvel and Disney Encourage R-Rated, Mature Tone

How could it be Deadpool and Wolverine without it being R-Rated? That wouldn't be any fun, right?

Deadpool 3 is one of the most highly anticipated movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as this time, the Merc with a Mouth is bringing with him an old pal who has a knack in violence, too: Wolverine. As they make the jump to the MCU, of course, it would be no fun if it isn't R-Rated, right? Thankfully, Marvel and Disney encourage the mature tone of the movie!

Deadpool's movies easily became fan-favorites as it perfectly captures that of the comic book version of the character. He isn't called Merc with a Mouth for nothing -- his violent tendencies with his obscene language are what makes Deadpool, Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect actor to play the character, as well, with his on-point sense of humor, and quick-witted remarks, he is, literally, Deadpool personified.

After the Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the properties under the latter like Deadpool and the X-Men can now join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and even bring the previous actors who played the role into the franchise. However, fans were worried that as the projects are now under the House of Mouse, the tone of the movie may not be as raunchy as before given that Disney's brand is usually more family friendly. In this fortunate circumstance, Disney and Marvel even encourage the director of Deadpool 3, Shawn Levy, to maintain the mature tone of the movie. Levy revealed to Wired:

Not only have Kevin Feige and Marvel and Disney supported this extremely Deadpool-ian, audacious, R-rated tone, they've also supported our super meta, self-referential self-awareness. Some of the jokes are dirty, some of them are cultural observations, but that's what we love about Deadpool, that he knows he's in a movie, even though the stakes are real. Our movie is very loyal to that DNA too, with tremendous Marvel and Disney support, in making fun of and being self-aware about everything, including themselves.

This solidifies the statements of the writers of Deadpool 3, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who revealed to The Playlist in 2022 that the movie will not be "Disney-fied." Reese shared:

It's these [Disney] people and these people do things their way. And we were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel's been incredibly supportive. They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It's not like any particular joke may be the one that they say, 'You know, that's too far,' that could happen, but to this point, it's been nothing but support.

What is the current status of Deadpool 3?

To date, Deadpool 3 has been delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing writers' strike and thus, the 2024 release date is not possible at the moment. The production of the Ryan Reynolds-led film is currently on hold as well as the other MCU titles that are affected by the strike. As the current SAG-AFTRA strike seems to be reaching an end, this could be great news for the movies like Deadpool 3 to move forward after the conclusion of the current strike.
