Daenerys Targaryen is coming back to Westeros, and this time she answers to the player. The Mother of Dragons is one of the playable heroes in Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the real-time strategy title that puts the great houses' war for the Iron Throne in the hands of commanders when it launches in early 2027.
The game comes from PlaySide Studios, the Melbourne-based developer and publisher behind it, and it is built as a classic premium RTS for PC. Players take command of House Stark, House Lannister or House Targaryen — or seize control of the Night King and his Army of the Dead — raising banners, training units and fighting to conquer the Seven Kingdoms.
Daenerys leads a confirmed roster of eight heroes drawn from the series. She is joined by Robb Stark, Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister and Tywin Lannister, alongside the Night King himself and two direwolves, Ghost and Grey Wind, who fight as playable units in their own right. Each hero brings unique abilities that can turn a battle: Jon Snow rallies the troops around him on the front line, while Tywin Lannister directs the Lannister war machine from behind
it.
House Targaryen's strength is exactly what fans would expect — dragons. In War for Westeros, dragons are not set dressing: they take to the skies as aerial attackers capable of burning enemy fortresses to the ground. The Night King answers with the war's most unsettling mechanic, raising soldiers killed in battle as new undead units, so every sloppy fight feeds his army.
Victory runs through the work of a commander. Players secure resources, construct buildings, capture outposts and claim territory across locations that include King's Landing, The Wall and Ashemark, razing enemy bases rather than simply wiping out armies. The war plays out across a single-player campaign — Robb Stark's campaign centers on the Battle of the Five Kings — as well as skirmish battles that can be fought solo or in free-for-all multiplayer.

The road to launch has grown longer. The game was first announced in 2025 and originally targeted 2026, but PlaySide pushed the release to early 2027, saying the extra time is needed to reach the level of quality the studio is aiming for. A beta is planned ahead of launch, with sign-ups open through the game's official site.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros launches on PC via Steam in early 2027. For Daenerys, it is a return long in the making — and this time, her fate is not written by anyone else.
