Cyberpunk 2077 peaked at 187,215 concurrent players on Steam on Sunday, the highest the game has reached on the platform since the Phantom Liberty era in fall 2023. Nearly six years after the game's December 2020 launch, Night City is drawing crowds that the game has not seen in three years.
CD Projekt Red confirmed the milestone through its investor relations account, rounding the figure to 187k concurrent players. "We are excited to see so many players back in Night City!" the studio said.
The surge follows a stacked week for the franchise, with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 premiering on Netflix on October 20 and Update 2.5 arriving for the game on October 22. The update, built around the new season, added dual-wielding, new cosmetics, customizable cyberware fashion, expanded digital tourism and a new story mission linked to Edgerunners.
The pattern is a familiar one for CD Projekt Red, since the first season of Edgerunners is widely credited with powering the game's comeback after its troubled launch. That anime bump peaked at 136,724 concurrent Steam players in September 2022, which makes this week's 187,215 peak the bigger of the two Edgerunners surges.
For comparison, the game's Phantom Liberty peak in October 2023 climbed past 274,000 concurrent players on the back of the expansion and the sweeping Update 2.0. A steep discount is helping the current run as well, with Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition currently cut by 70% on Steam.
The numbers also cap one of the most unusual second acts in modern gaming, for a title that opened with a Steam record of more than 1 million concurrent players in December 2020 before its buggy launch sent the audience tumbling. Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty rebuilt the game's reputation in 2023, and the Edgerunners seasons have repeatedly proven they can refill Night City on demand.
The new season gives returning players a direct thread back into the game, since Update 2.5's story mission is tied to the events of Edgerunners Season 2 rather than standing apart from it. That crossover, paired with long-requested features like dual-wielding, gives the surge both a story hook and a mechanical one.
Steam is the only platform with public concurrent numbers, so the same wave is likely playing out across GOG, the Epic Games Store and consoles without a public count. CD Projekt Red is also continuing development on the sequel, Cyberpunk 2, while the original keeps finding new peaks. Peaks this size also tend to hold for days rather than hours when an update and a new season land together, so the game's final number for the week may still climb past Sunday's mark.
