CD Projekt Red recently shared the reason behind Phantom Liberty being the only Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, claiming that it was a “technological decision.” Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty builds on the basic foundations that were previously set by Cyberpunk and also features an all-new side of Night City that players can easily explore. Players can go on different missions in the form of a cyber-enhanced mercenary that will face all types of people.

Lately, Cyberpunk 2077 fans have been wondering why the game is receiving only one expansion. They finally got their answer from Michael Nowakowski, the senior vice president of business development, during the latest CD Projekt Red’s earnings call. He stated that their shift from REDengine, the developer’s game engine, to Unreal Engine 5 was a “key reason” behind the game only featuring one expansion.

When asked about the number of copies Phantom Liberty would have to sell for the developers to create more DLC, Nowakowski said:

"As we have announced a long time ago, we're not going to make a second or third expansion. This is the only expansion of the game, and it has nothing to do with the numbers and how satisfied or not we are with sales or anything of the kind. It's a technological decision, to be honest. This is the last time we're working on the REDengine, for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future, as you know, we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided [Phantom Liberty] was the only one."

In September 2022, CD Projekt Red was forced to reveal that Phantom Liberty was going to be the only expansion after a couple of early mixed messages about Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC. The developers also decided to remove the multiplayer mode from the game after its rocky launch since they chose to spend years working on the base game and making changes to it that completely turned around in September 2022.

Phantom Liberty is set to release on September 26, 2023, and will see plenty of brand-new story content being introduced in Cyberpunk 2077, along with multiple gameplay changes. On top of this, a lot of new features will also be added to the game, such as vehicular combat, a teaser of The Witcher, and a Cyberpunk-inspired cyberpsychosis feature. Unfortunately, for The Witcher, players might be required to upgrade their PCs according to the game’s requirements.
