Recently, a number of rumors have been circulating around who would be returning in Deadpool 3 - From Ben Affleck returning as the Fox-era Daredevil to Halle Berry and Famke Jannsen reprising their X-Men roles. We also have seemingly confirmed that Jennifer Garner will return as Elektra. But now, another actor is rumored to play one of the mutants in the highly-anticipated threequel starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.
Note that the following report is a rumor so take the following story with a grain of salt.
According to a report from Twitter user @CanWeGetSomeToast, Channing Tatum will be getting a comic-accurate suit for his portrayal of Gambit in Deadpool 3. That means that we might be seeing the 43-year-old actor wear Gambit's purple armor, trench coat, and the rest of the character's iconic outfit.
The reason why this rumor is rather interesting is due to the history behind Tatum's connection to the character. The actor was originally attached to star in a solo Gambit movie back in 2015, but the movie had various production setbacks due to either creative differences with directors or scheduling conflicts.
The Gambit movie was still being planned for 2019, but was officially canceled upon the infamous Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox. The film, and over half-a-dozen other X-Men-related projects were either scrapped or put on hold.
This report aligns well with what Instagram user @mytimetoshineh1 claimed last month. According to that rumor, Tatum will be returning as Gambit and has already filmed a cameo for Deadpool 3.
If the rumor turns out to be true, this would be the first time a live-action Gambit has appeared in a feature film in over a decade. The character previously appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, played by Taylor Kitsch. Critics bashed the movie for various reasons, including the introduction of Wade Wilson (Deadpool) into the X-Men universe. The failure later motivated Reynolds to do the Merc with a Mouth righ, leading to the current run of Deadpool movies.
Deadpool 3 was originally set to release on May 3, 2024, but Disney recently omitted Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated movie from its updated "upcoming theatrical releases" slate, which lists the company's theatrical release slate from September 2023 through June 2024.
