As fans are now waiting for the nearing release of Bridgerton Season 3, some can’t help but wonder if there will still be Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Season 2. It has been a year since Netflix binge-dropped the six-episode spinoff series, but it hasn’t received a second-season renewal yet. So, as the wait continues, the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, finally gives a hopeful update on the much-awaited second season.
In an interview with Variety to talk about the future of Bridgerton, Rhimes was asked if she had thought of doing a possible Queen Charlotte Season 2. And by the looks of it, fans weren’t the only ones waiting for a new season, as Netflix itself had the same question for her.
“I feel like I’m having a conversation with Netflix! They ask me this question all the time!” she said. “I’m trying to figure it out still. I don’t want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told — do you know what I mean?”
As the master of steamy drama herself, the TV producer has already set a reputation for creating some of the best series known today. Aside from Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte, she’s also behind the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, the critically acclaimed How to Get Away with Murder, Scandal, and more.
That said, she didn’t want to do Queen Charlotte Season 2 just for fan service and doing it. She wanted it to have substance and a story that would once again put everyone in awe.
“I don’t want to make a second season of Queen Charlotte, and you’re going to be, like, ‘Well, that was not that great,’” she continued.
Will there be Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Season 2?
So far, there are no words about Queen Charlotte Season 2. The first season received generally positive reviews, thanks to Adjoa Andoh and India Ria Amarteifio’s great performance as Lady Danbury and the young version of the titular character, respectively. The show also received several nominations at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards and an Outstanding Drama Series recognition at the NACCP Image Awards.
Rhimes also received a Black Reel Award for Outstanding Writing, Drama Series for the show. It also topped Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 and debuted at No. 1 in 91 countries. Hence, it surprised many that it hadn’t been renewed yet.
In a different interview with Entertainment Weekly in May 2023, Rhimes revealed that they had told a “closed-ended” story that completed the tale of Charlotte and her husband, King George III (James Fleet). The show is also dubbed a limited series, though she’s still open to possibilities.
“There have been questions, but I'm not having conversations about it yet,” she said. “I'm not ruling anything out because I never know.”
So, as Rhimes is still thinking of a perfect story that will continue the tale of Charlotte and George, there may still be hope for a second season. Queen Charlotte is available to stream on Netflix, while Bridgerton Part 1 is set to be released on May 16, 2024, and Part 2 on June 13, 2024.
