In an exciting development for anime fans, the popular series Black Clover is reportedly set to return with a sequel four years after the anime concluded its run, as hinted in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #32. The news, shared by X user @WSJ_manga on Thursday, suggests that production is underway, though no official confirmation has been made. This potential revival has sparked anticipation among viewers, with more details reportedly slated for release on July 7, 2025, leaving fans eager for the next chapter in Asta’s quest to become the Wizard King.

The Black Clover manga, created by Yuki Tabata, has been a staple of the Shonen Jump lineup since its debut in 2015, weaving a tale of action, magic, and deep camaraderie. The anime adaptation, which first aired in 2017 and ran for 170 episodes until 2021, follows Asta, a young boy born without magic in a world where magical ability defines one’s worth, and his rival-turned-friend Yuno, a naturally gifted mage. The series earned a loyal following with its intense battles and inspiring underdog story. The reported return of the anime, accompanied by images of the iconic Volume 1 cover featuring Asta and Yuno, as well as a dynamic poster teasing future clashes, hints at a renewed effort to expand this beloved universe.

Should the sequel move forward, Studio Pierrot, the animation studio behind the series, will be under scrutiny to deliver. The new season is expected to adapt the manga’s later arcs, introducing fresh challenges for Asta and the Black Bulls as they navigate the Clover Kingdom’s trials. The timing aligns with the franchise’s 10th anniversary, adding to the excitement. To commemorate this milestone, 17 prominent mangakas, including Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen), Tite Kubo (Bleach), Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto), Kohei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia), and Koyoharu Gotouge (Demon Slayer), are reportedly contributing special artwork, potentially elevating the series’ cultural impact.

Why Black Clover Anime was in Hiatus

The Black Clover anime’s hiatus, which began after its 170-episode run concluded in March 2021, was a time of uncertainty and strategic planning. The pause was reportedly influenced by several factors, including the challenges faced by Studio Pierrot. The studio struggled with resource limitations, such as an understaffed team and constrained animation budgets, which became noticeable in episodes criticized for inconsistencies, notably the experimental Episode 63. Director Tatsuya Yoshihara reportedly attempted innovative approaches despite these handicaps, highlighting the production difficulties.

The hiatus also allowed the manga to advance, giving the team time to align the anime with Tabata’s ongoing narrative. This break was seen as a necessary step to ensure a high-quality continuation, avoiding the rush to catch up with the source material that plagued earlier seasons. Additionally, the pause provided Studio Pierrot an opportunity to address internal challenges and rebuild momentum. The reported return, if confirmed, could mark a turning point, with Season 2 potentially reestablishing Black Clover as a leading shonen anime, bringing renewed energy to the Clover Kingdom’s magical saga.
