Netflix will feature another live-action adaptation of an animated series. This time, it will be Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s action fantasy Avatar: The Last Airbender. After giving an official first look at the Fire Nation members last month, the streamer has dropped the series’ official poster at the ongoing 2023 Geeked Week.

The key art features a very familiar scene from the original Nickelodeon animated series. Here, Aang is seen holding his iconic airbender staff while seemingly leading their journey, along with Sokka on his right and Katara on her left. The two look amused as they gaze at their surroundings while on top of Appa. Of course, this adventure wouldn’t be complete without Aang and his friends’ loyal companion, Momo, as the winged lemur sits beside Sokka.

Aside from the poster, Netflix also teased a major update for the new series. On Thursday, November 9, the service revealed it would release the official first look for Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action. The preview will be part of some of the major announcements happening at the Geeked Week event tomorrow.

What is Avatar: The Last Airbender about?

Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the story of the four nations of the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. These lands used to live in harmony, with the Avatar, the master of all four elements, on the lead, keeping the peace between them. However, everything changes when the Fire Nation attacks and kills the Air Nomads, their first step into conquering the world. As the incarnation of the Avatar has yet to come, the world is in danger as everything feels hopeless.

But a glimmer of hope will be again seen with the arrival of Aang, a young Air Nomad who’s also the last of his kind. He’s about to take his place as the next Avatar and go on a journey with his friends, Sokka and Katara, his siblings, and Southern Water Tribe members to face Fire Lord Ozai and save the world. But with Crown Prince Zuko on the way, they will need as much help as possible.

You can read the synopsis below:

The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the Firebenders toward conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang, a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar. Alongside his newfound friends Sokka and Katara, siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai. But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is scheduled for release in 2024. With the success of the live-action adaptation of One Piece, which was already renewed for a second season, there are high expectations for this new series. Hopefully, this won’t be another victim of Netflix’s live-action anime curse.
