First Narnia: The Magician's Nephew Trailer From Greta Gerwig Promises Punk-Rock Worlds and Aslan's Cosmic Creation

Two curious kids and a pair of magic rings open the door — Narnia: The Magician's Nephew ends its first trailer with a world being born.

A dusty London attic, a magician uncle, and a pair of magic rings open the door to infinite worlds in the first trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew — and the footage closes with nothing less than the creation of Narnia itself, as a great lion takes shape out of cosmic dust and lets out a roar.

Netflix's first trailer sells the scale of Gerwig's version from its opening seconds: a narrator promises that "Sometimes, one story is the beginning of all others," over a dusty London attic, a laboratory of glowing bottles and magic rings, and the first glimpse of infinite worlds stacked beyond our own — a punk-tinged retelling of C.S. Lewis's creation story rather than a traditional period fantasy.

The trailer opens with Polly Plummer (Beatrice Campbell) and Digory Kirke (David McKenna) in the Ketterly attic, wondering whether Digory's Uncle Andrew has gone mad after a sheet is pulled off the wooden wardrobe. "Mom always calls him a magician," Digory tells Polly — and Daniel Craig's eccentric Uncle Andrew soon proves the title fits, ushering the children into his colorful laboratory. Handing Digory a set of rings, Andrew invites him to "See for yourself."

The rings carry the children into a wood between infinite worlds, but Digory touches a magical object before Polly can stop him — and summons Jadis, the future White Witch, played by Emma Mackey with silver-shadowed eyes and a metallic dress. Jadis leaps down, brandishes her silver wand, and whispers, "Come to me, my power," as Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven swells underneath the footage. Carey Mulligan's Mabel Kirke is heard marveling, "Magic, it's everywhere," before a winged horse carries the two children off a cliff. The trailer ends on the narrator's question — "Have you ever seen a world born?" — as Aslan, voiced by Meryl Streep, forms from stardust and roars.

Gerwig writes and directs the film, her first feature since Barbie, and also produces alongside Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, and Vincent Sieber-Smith. The ensemble also includes Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma, with an original score by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.

Published sixth in The Chronicles of Narnia but set first in its chronology, The Magician's Nephew tells how the comings and goings between our world and Narnia began — and how Digory, the boy in the attic, grows into the professor whose wardrobe changes everything in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Netflix describes the film as a sweeping adventure about the creation of Narnia, brought to the screen for the first time.
