Xbox Cloud Gaming Will Reportedly Stream GTA 6 Exclusively — and PC Gamers Win Big

Microsoft is reported to have locked exclusive cloud rights for GTA 6, giving PC players a launch path without a native port.

Xbox has reportedly secured exclusive game-streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI. If the deal is confirmed, it would make Xbox Cloud Gaming the only cloud platform where Rockstar's open-world blockbuster is playable — and could make Microsoft's streaming service the only way to play the game on a PC at launch.

The details come from Tom Warren's reporting at The Verge, which neither Microsoft, Rockstar Games, nor Take-Two Interactive has confirmed. During an internal Xbox town hall meeting on Tuesday, CEO Asha Sharma teased that the company has something in place with GTA 6 that "no other platform holder is doing" — a remark Warren's report connects to the reported exclusive streaming agreement.

Under the reported deal, GTA 6 would stream exclusively through Xbox Cloud Gaming, shutting rival cloud platforms out of the biggest launch in gaming history. No official announcement has been made, and key details remain unknown — including how long the exclusivity would last and how the game would be offered, whether as a purchase that can be streamed, a subscription perk, or something else entirely.

The PC angle is where the reported deal gets genuinely interesting. Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, with no PC version announced for day one. Rockstar has a long history of making PC players wait — Grand Theft Auto V took nearly two years to reach PC, and Red Dead Redemption 2 took a full year. If Xbox markets Cloud Gaming as the only way to play GTA 6 on a PC at launch, it hands Microsoft a powerful selling point for its streaming service aimed squarely at the platform's most impatient audience.

The move would also be Xbox's first real counterpunch in a GTA 6 news cycle that Sony has dominated for months. PlayStation has rolled out PS5 Pro performance enhancements for the game, limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers, console bundles, and "Plays Best on PS5" messaging. Warren previously reported that GTA 6 pre-orders were heavily skewed toward PS5, a claim Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball publicly disputed. A streaming exclusive would give Xbox its own GTA 6 headline — one that plays to the company's strengths rather than its console install base.

It fits the broader direction Sharma has laid out for Xbox. The company has spent the past year pushing an "Xbox everywhere" strategy built around cloud gaming, PC, and devices beyond the traditional console, even as its hardware sales trail Sony's by a wide margin. If the report holds up, landing the most anticipated game ever made as a streaming exclusive is exactly the kind of move that strategy was designed for.

For now, the biggest questions are unanswered: whether the deal is real, how long the exclusivity runs, what it will cost players, and when — or whether — Xbox and Rockstar will confirm it publicly. But if the report holds through launch, Xbox Cloud Gaming is about to become the most talked-about way to play GTA 6 — especially for the millions of PC gamers who otherwise would have been stuck waiting.
