The Witcher Season 4 has been formally greenlit by Netflix via an Instagram statement in August 2022, promising more action and fantasy. However, fans should grasp onto their swords as there is a twist: Henry Cavill, who portrayed Geralt of Rivia, is passing the torch to Liam Hemsworth for the imminent installment.

The casting of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt in The Witcher Season 4 and beyond has generated great interest, but this is not the only reason why the upcoming installment has garnered so much attention. The fourth season has been meticulously planned by the show's writers, with the majority of the existing ensemble returning to continue the character arcs they have developed over the course of the series.

The new season is expected to again center on Geralt of Rivia as he continues his adventures in this perilous world and enhances his abilities as the Witcher. Most, if not all, fans are aware that the series’ renewal had been completely up in the air since there were speculations that Henry would be leaving the show, but Geralt’s story continues as it has already been established without him. As fans await for more details, here is everything we know so far about the upcoming The Witcher Season 4.

The Witcher Season 4 Potential Release Date: When will it be available on Netflix?

Unfortunately, Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for The Witcher Season 4. The production list of FTIA suggested that the filming for the imminent installment will begin in September 2023. However, Redanian Intelligence reports that the crew is now targeting the beginning of 2024 instead.

If the reported delays are true, avid followers of the show could be looking at a release date of 2025. We’ll be sure to keep this space updated when new information rolls in.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that as of this writing, Netflix has not yet confirmed these claims about The Witcher Season 4. However, if it is delayed, it will likely be due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes, which are fighting for equitable pay in the streaming era. However, since much of the show is shot internationally, it may be permitted to continue filming, as is the case with The Rings of Power Season 2 and House of the Dragon Season 2, among other shows.

The Witcher Season 4 Cast: Who are the actors included in the upcoming season?

The fact that Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia is one of the most prominent and significant aspects of The Witcher Season 4. Talking of the transition from Henry to Liam, the series’ executive producer Steve Gaub told Radio Times:

"I think, holistically, Henry gave us an incredible three seasons of Geralt but there's been so many franchises that have had really strong title characters and eventually, for whatever reason, personal decision or, or just the length of time frame, the title character changes actors."

To recall, Henry announced his departure from the series in October 2022, leaving several fans devastated. While many have a lot to say about the recasting, there are some who are feeling positive about Liam stepping into the role. The Man of Steel star even took to Instagram to express his excitement about passing the torch to Miley Cyrus’ former husband, writing:

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Liam, for his part, shared a similar sentiment on Instagram. The Paranoia actor penned:

“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

Other cast and characters expected to make a comeback in The Witcher Season 4 include Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid, Graham McTavish as Sigismund Dijkstra, Cassie Clare as Philippa Eilhart, Mecia Simson as Francesca Findabair, and Mimi M. Khayisa as Fringilla Vigo. Eamon Farren is also returning for the forthcoming installment as Cahir, alongside Bart Edwards as Emperor Emhyr, Mahesh Jadu as Vilgefortz, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Freya Allan as Princess Cirilla and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg.

The Witcher Season 4 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?

Credit: Netflix

Netflix has yet to release any specific plot details for The Witcher Season 4. However, based on the order of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, it would make sense for the fourth installment to encompass the events of Baptism of Fire, which begins with Geralt recovering from the Thanedd Island coup and Ciri's involvement with The Rats.

Geralt's romantic relationship with Yennefer will also reportedly play a pivotal role in The Witcher Season 4, and alterations made to Ciri's story in Season 3 allegedly indicate that her character will also embark on an intriguing voyage. The fourth installment could go in virtually any direction, as there is still a vast amount of source material to explore.

The only certain aspect of The Witcher Season 4's plot is its "multiple worlds," but it is unknown how the new installment will utilize the multiverse. Regarding Yennefer, the fourth season is unlikely to adhere to the source material, so it is uncertain what will happen to her.

However, it is certain that Vilgefortz will pursue Yennefer while attempting to maintain a low profile. The evil wizard is attempting to gain access to the Monoliths, which may ultimately occur in The Witcher Season 4, and viewers may finally learn Vilgefortz's endgame.

While Geralt's primary objective in the upcoming fourth installment is to rescue Ciri, the wizard is also on Geralt's kill list, and a confrontation between them is possible. Just like Season 3, The Witcher Season 4 could be an eight-episode, epic, multiverse-spanning conflict.
